Missouri Mountain
Did Missouri on Tuesday and Belford and Oxford on Thursday. Tuesday had afternoon storms, otherwise these three are worth doing together, you will save 2000' and an hour of hiking if you do it this way. Goes without saying yo have to be fit. Some folks camp at an old log cabin, well before the trail split, but that only saves a fast hiker 45 minutes. It takes more time than that to set up camp not too mention the extra weight. They don't want you camping around the trail split, sign posted as of 2024. Missouri was 5.5 hrs for me, 2.5 less than what was posted in the book. Belford and Oxford were 6.5 hrs for me, 3.5 hrs less than what was posted in the guide. Belford's route is NW facing (no morning sun) and the wind was quite impressive. Maybe plan Belford and Oxford for a summer outing vs fall. Missouri gets a lot of sun. Not much wildlife either day, just your typical pika's and marmots.
It was sunny, there were some people out and about, another typical warm fall day in the Colorado mountains

With Belford & Oxford: Record 49:30 from Summit to TH
https://www.strava.com/activities/7711607375
Great day out with Richard Kennedy. Had no thought or intent to run down quick…it just kind of happened.
I hardly slept last night & felt pretty rough most of the day…really struggled on the climbs. Was so happy & relieved to finally get on top of our final peak for the day. Started off Missouri pretty relaxed, and started to feel good finally. Hit the first mile down faster than expected, so just went with the flow and started clicking off miles without straining. VMO had felt on the verge of cramping since the climb up, so I just tried to keep things smooth and hopefully not cramp. Feet were still tender after last weeks disaster, so had to be careful there as well. Made a couple of navigational errors and got off course a couple times as well.
I think you have more close views of other 14ers than from any other vantage point. Pretty nice!
Fun seeing some Wasatch Mountain Wranglers up top too…Scott Wessemann and Sam Jewkes.
Lastly, UD Jason Schlarb shorts are amazing!

NW Ridge
Sawatch finisher on Mom's birthday! Started too fast (1050 ft in first 30 mins). Got nauseous and dry heaved 5-6 times. Slowed down and made the summit without incident. Very windy on ridge!
good views all around, though so windy we quickly descended from summit...

Missouruh
After being defeated by Missouri when climbing Belford and Oxford in June it was high time to conquer it. We started from the TH at 5:00 am and summitted shortly after 8:00 am. Clouds were in the west but nothing materialized. Great views of the Elkhead Basin and most of the 14ers in the Sawatch. The NW ridge was entirely free of any snow which made the crux fairly straightforward.

Everything was going smooth until I got to the climbing section between the summit and Elkhead Pass. A little airy at times but overall fun climbing. And it sent! Be wary of going this way though.

Awesome long day!
Great day on this fantastic trail into the Elk Head Pass Basin. Did the standard route and even had some decent exposure crossing the upper snowfields on the west side of the ridge. Great, fast snow climb up to the ridge.

From Pine Creek trail
We hiked in from the Pine Creek trail and summited in some questionable conditions. We descended toward emerald and didn't walk on a trail for hours. It was great.

West Ridge
What a beautiful day for mid-September. The West Ridge route is steep and the loose rock and soil make for an adventure coming back down. The crux was no big deal and actually was a fun change of pace. However, the route just after the crux is to be taken seriously! All total, I saw at least 15 people coming on and off the summit. I'm glad to finally check this one off the list.

Standard route with many deviations
#1 5-28-16 Long snow climb after the first junction. Wonderful morning snow, soft afternoon mush. One dicey section just before the summit. With Lana. Couloirs good with little sign of slide activity. 14er number 27. #2 -7-05-22 W/Lana. No snow, normal route, caught in mild thunderstorm on the descent. Crossed the braided stream in the wrong place on the way up but repented of our mistake on the return. Beautiful carpet of columbines in the lower Missouri Gulch.

Good 14er
With Michelle. One of the easier ones we've done. 4 hours at a leisurely pace, snowed lightly on summit and on descent. Goats galore. Ate at Fiesta Mexican Restaurant in Salida. Plates the size of manhole covers. Fajitas and Carne Asada does a body good. And Dos Equis Amber (no IPA on tap). Ask any Mexican.
