After being defeated by Missouri when climbing Belford and Oxford in June it was high time to conquer it. We started from the TH at 5:00 am and summitted shortly after 8:00 am. Clouds were in the west but nothing materialized. Great views of the Elkhead Basin and most of the 14ers in the Sawatch. The NW ridge was entirely free of any snow which made the crux fairly straightforward.
Standard route through lovely Missouri Gulch, then descended south and back to Elkhead Pass as snowstorm arrived
Everything was going smooth until I got to the climbing section between the summit and Elkhead Pass. A little airy at times but overall fun climbing. And it sent! Be wary of going this way though.
Great day on this fantastic trail into the Elk Head Pass Basin. Did the standard route and even had some decent exposure crossing the upper snowfields on the west side of the ridge. Great, fast snow climb up to the ridge.
We hiked in from the Pine Creek trail and summited in some questionable conditions. We descended toward emerald and didn't walk on a trail for hours. It was great.
Hiked in the late 90s or early 2000s.
What a beautiful day for mid-September. The West Ridge route is steep and the loose rock and soil make for an adventure coming back down. The crux was no big deal and actually was a fun change of pace. However, the route just after the crux is to be taken seriously! All total, I saw at least 15 people coming on and off the summit. I'm glad to finally check this one off the list.
#1 5-28-16 Long snow climb after the first junction. Wonderful morning snow, soft afternoon mush. One dicey section just before the summit. With Lana. Couloirs good with little sign of slide activity. 14er number 27.
Day of rain and mist but was a gentle hike thru basin. Lots of choss to traverse to Elkhart pass.
With Michelle. One of the easier ones we've done. 4 hours at a leisurely pace, snowed lightly on summit and on descent. Goats galore. Ate at Fiesta Mexican Restaurant in Salida. Plates the size of manhole covers. Fajitas and Carne Asada does a body good. And Dos Equis Amber (no IPA on tap). Ask any Mexican.
Nice tour of Northwest Ridge route. Perfect warm fall weather and beautiful changing aspens. What a great jaunt! A nice moderate effort hike
Beautiful day. We began our climb at the trailhead at 5:00am and summited at 10:00 am. We made it back to the car at 2:00pm. On our descent we spotted a female Elk grazing in the basin.
Standard Route. What a great day! My second time into that beautiful basin.
Fun outing. Had a goat follow us from the summit to where the trail drops off the ridge.
Snow couloir climb
Climbed standard route - fun hike with great views of the surrounding Sawatch peaks!
Backpacked in late Friday. Had just enough time to get Missouri and Iowa, but ran out of time on Emerald Peak.
The West Ridge is not great - the 4x4 road is very rough and will really jar you (especially if you're hungover). The trail is crappy compared to the standard trail - there are hardly any switchbacks or steps, and it is extremely steep. Stick to the standard route.
Started at Missouri Gulch TH. First two miles were steep. Great wake up in the morning. Beautiful meadow to a ridge with fantastic views. After summit, dropped off the east ridge. Things then got interesting. Back to the TH in 8.5 hours. While your doing this hike, better off baggin Belford and Oxford too. And Iowa and Emerald if your into the century club!
