Farewell to Grandfather  Sucess!

We originally wanted to take a few newbie climbers for their first summit, but every of them bailed at the last minute due to anxiety or scheduling. My regular climbing partner and I went up and back in 5 hours 25 minutes to see how fast we could push ourselves. He also brought his grandfather's ashes to the summit for a quick memorial and release onto the flanks of the mountain; his grandfather last summited Mt. St. Helens in the late 1970's, and was unable to return for a post-eruption summit.

Last Climbers of the Day  Sucess!

We were originally planning on camping along the trail so that a friend of ours could take his time and make the summit (this was his first attempt at an actual "mountain"), but he had to drop out at the first boulder field. We left him to prepare camp while we gambled at a chance to make the summit before it got dark. We made the summit at 4:30pm and saw the sun go down as we hiked back to camp. Amazing weekend trip!

Climb On!  Sucess!

Make sure to bring a snowboard! Leave early because the snow gets sticky pretty quick in the summer.

In winter  Sucess!

This route is even more of a challenge in the winter when you skin up the road to climbers bivouac. Especially as you have to dodge the slednecks as the come whizzing by you a great speed, leaving you choking in their two stroke exhaust.

A Solid Workout With A Big Payoff...  Sucess!

Because I share the same birthday (May 18) as Mount Saint Helens' most famous eruption, although I was exactly three years old when the eruption occurred, I had always wanted to summit the mountain. This has to be the rockiest and sandiest (or should I say "ashiest"?) route I have ever climbed up a mountain, so far. Gorgeous day with spectacular scenery. Looking into the crater, and seeing the devastation of the 1980 eruption up-close, makes the entire trip worth it. Great views of all the nearby volcanoes and other peaks.

Stormy conditions

Interesting little train-up effort. Really foul weather kept us from making the true summit. Probably a better early season climb.

Too Windy

We camped the night before in the rain. There were periods of blue skies, but the wind above 5,000 feet was relentless and it was clearly stormy at the summit.

Lovely jubbly  Sucess!

Took this route as a first timer, cloudy at first but then pooped out above the mist and beautiful all the ways to the top.

Route Climbed: Monitor Ridge Date Climbed: June 20th, 2001  Sucess!

A long, slow, slog up a mountainside full of slush. Weather was clear and hot. Really impressive when you reach the summit and see the destruction caused by the eruption and the power of mother nature.
