Monte Civetta, Dolomites

Monte Civetta, Dolomites

This winter sunset photograph of Monte Civetta in the Dolomites was captured from Rifugio Nuvolau, a small Italian mountain hut at an altitude of 2,575m. It sits atop a peak with wonderful 360 degree views and has sheer cliffs on each side. The only way to get to the hut in winter is on skis with skins and not surprisingly few people venture up there, as it really was treachous. I felt lucky to return to the motorhome alive after the twilight downhill ski. In fact, while joyously photographing, nerves began to creep in..thinking about the dangers that lay ahead. Wonderful

Civetta photo, very different from the summer view. We climbed the Nuvolau by its literally knife-sharp east ridge several years ago, there is a short but enjoyable ferrata up that way.
