Unfinished business  Sucess!

In September of 1992 I climbed Boundary Peak as a state highpoint. My then climbing partner ran over to Montgomery and back. I was saving my energy for our Whitney climb a couple of days later. Thirty years later I came back to climb Montgomery under the auspices of it being a Desert Peaks Section Emblem Peak. I know, doesn't make any sense.

Tagged Boundary and Montgomery from Queen Mine Saddle  Sucess!

Drove past Queen Mine and camped at the saddle. Hit both peaks the following morning on a beautiful sunny day!

Boundary-Montgomery combo  Sucess!

Nice day without wind or smoke from the western forest fires. The ridge traverse from Boundary is easier than it looks. I think staying below the gendarmes along the left side going to Montgomery is the path of least resistance. I climbed over their tops outbound and skirted them inbound.

Boundary.Montgomery  Sucess!

Don't be in too much of a hurry to regain the ridge after descending Boundary, its easier to lose a bit of elevation and regain it.

Montgomery and Boundry day hike  Sucess!

Driving up Queen Mine Rd. from Bishop. From Boundary Peak 1 hour and 15 minutes casual hike.Solo hike with nobody else in sight. I would have thought that the potential of bagging two peaks in one day hike would bring here hoards of people. Surprisingly, I did not see one single person the hole day. And yes, on Queen Mile Rd any type of car will drive, but for the last two miles there is no way a sedan can negotiate the 3-4 big holes in the road. I left the trailhead at 5:30AM and got back to car at 2:00PM.

Along with Boundary Peak  Sucess!

Tagged this one along with Boundary Peak Oct 6, 2014. Tough, solid 3rd class scramble over from Boundary needed 1 hour over and 1.5 hours back to Boundary.

Montgomery Peak  Sucess!

Along with Boundary. Fun traverse between the two. I enjoyed the novelty of crossing the California/ Nevada border at 13,000 ft.

Non-standard route  Sucess!

The "non-standard" part refers mainly to the way we got to Boundary, the jumping off point for Montgomery. However, we got into some sketchy terrain on some of the "obstacles" on the ridge between Boundary and Montgomery.

From Boundary  Sucess!

From Boundary, I really enjoyed this leg of the trip. Tried to make it as Class 3 as possible without disrupting too many big blocks. Very cool day tagging 2 peaks in 2 states within an hour. :) And yes, we saw a herd of 10 wild horses on the way back to the truck.

Along with Boundary  Sucess!

Climbed after Boundary. I enjoyed the ridge and final scramble to Montgomery much more than the loose scree slog to Boundary Peak. Did the Queen Mine Route. WE had perfect weather

Lost Trekking Poles  Sucess!

Sub-zero temperatures all day long with howling winds. There was hardly any snow at all. We brought crampons and ice axes but didn't even need them. We had no issues driving to the TH for the Queen Mine Route. I left my trekking poles on the scree/talus slope just below the summit. I had put them down on accident and then I walked away (thats what AMS will do to you). If you find them, PLEASE PM ME! I will pay for shipping! Awesome summit!

From Queen Mine saddle via Boundary  Sucess!

A very nice hike in the White Mountains. The traverse from Boundary was much easier than expected. Made it back to the car well before the thunderstorms started.

via Queen Mine  Sucess!

Made the traverse over from Boundary Peak. I got over to the west near the summit (dumb idea) and ended up climbing steep and loose rock. I accidentally pulled a chair size rock loose, and narrowly avoided getting crushed, escaping with just some scrapes on both legs.

Tough scramble  Sucess!

The scramble to Montgomery from Boundary is sketchy!!! But the view is better. Took me about 45 minutes each way from Boundary.

From Queen Mine via Boundary  Sucess!

Followed the ridge over from Boundary. Beautiful peak, definitely worth the trip over.
