Did this peak with the Boy Scouts
Did this from the Appalachian Trail as part of my first backpack ever. I did not realize how out of shape I was until I did this. First time I noticed this Monument on SP.

From Highway 40
I parked at the AT trailhead on Highway 40 and took the AT south to the monument and back. According to a sign I encountered, the one-way hike to the monument was three miles. I also investigated the summit of Bartman Hill on my way back. Overall, it was a pleasant hike, and the mountain laurel was in bloom.

Last Stop
Last 'summit' of a great vacation through the Shenandoahs. This was a nice way to break up a trip back west.

AT Northbound
Foggy day when I was up there. No views.

Nice History
Climbed while backpacking the AT from Harpers Ferry to Wolfsville Road in MD. We didn't go up the tower because we needed to quickly get to our next campsite at Pine Knob Shelter, a few miles down the trail. I did like the history posts along the trail on the way up, though.

Coincidence
Oddly, this is the first and only mountain I have ever climbed in Maryland, and two days later it was added to Summitpost. We had a beautiful stormy view. It gives you a great sense of the Antietam campaign--anyone doing the battlefield should stop here.
I remember this monument when I was on the Appalachian Trail near South Mountain. This monument did have some good views. This monument also represented the last destination of Our backpacking trip. We appraoach from the south and passed a number of other overlooks but I was only 12 at the time and forgot many of them. But I did not forget this one.

couple times
Have been to the monument several times, always enjoying the view. Best times have been in the fall while visiting to enjoy the migrating hawks!

First hiked in the 1960'sand most recently in 2007 with my son's Boy Scout troop. This has always been a fairly busy but lovely place to visit.
