Route Climbed: Moore's Wall Loop, Cook's Wall Trail Date Climbed: September 10, 2005  Sucess!

On Cook's Wall Trail, continue west just a bit, doing some light scrambling through brush and over rocks to reach the Devil's Chimney, the true high point of this ridge at 2359 feet.

You're right, Bob, that was a long 0.7 miles, but I think I figured it out. The trail map you pick up at the visitor's center shows Moore's Knob much closer to the trail marker than the actual observation post. Perhaps they were measuring to the place on their map and not the tower itself.

Overall, an enjoyable day. 88 degrees, but the trees offered shade most of the way up...unfortunately the heat haze clouded the views.

Date climbed is most recent. The trail is really pleasant, but for a bit more adventure, approach from the north from Tory's Den to use the climbers' trail, which hits the ridge just west of the tower on the summit.

An outstanding rock-climbing area with even the easy routes (which is what I do mostly), offering steep rock and good exposure.

Great hike. Decided to kill two peaks and get some good photo material to do a Sauratown page. The hike up to the top of Moore's Knob is fairly strenuous, but not too bad. They have a trail sign posting at one point that says "Moore's Knob .7 miles". That's the longest .7 mile I've ever hiked. It can't be right. And I walk 10 to 14 miles a day in my job. That seemed much longer than seven tenths of a mile.

At any rate, the park has a lot to offer, and I had more fun hiking today than I've had in quite a while. Simply wonderful hiking country with some stupendous views.
