Back up now though! Ascended SE gully/ S summit ridge described by Bob Burd in his 2005 trip report. Enjoyable Class 3 with a Class 4 move gaining the summit ridge.
Think it was pulled last year..
Tried to find a rumored 2nd-class route just north of the summit but no luck -- wound up making some awkward 4th-class moves. Plus all the brush made this less than fun. Couldn't find a summit register.
Ascended via NE gully, a bit brushy but it's possible to avoid most of it with some sticking to the steeper sides above the bushes. Nice scrambling and fun routefinding, with beautiful rocks everywhere.
Took the center gully immediately below the summit with minimal brush work and lots of nice scrambling. Descended further north (heading for N Maggie) in a gully with much more brush and less fun rock. Great view from top. Pictures
Good scramble on the ridge after North Maggie in the morning. Better view and climbing on this lower summit.
Nice class 3/4 scramble on good rock to gain the summit made up for lower gully bushwhack.
A fun 3rd class scramble with some snow to add to the challenge.
Attained the north ridge from the NE then traversed south to the summit. Found quite a bit more fun class 3+ scrambling along the way than I expected. I descended differently down a brush filled gully on the east side. Might try a more direct approach next time.
An enjoyable dayhike with N. Maggie Mtn, climbed with Matthew. Trip Report
An enjoyable dayhike from HIdden falls campground. Be forewarned, study the route very carefully and review the beta in close detail. Its not hard, but I went through the worst brush I've gone through in the Sierra and literally swam through the hellish shrub on more than one instance just because I wanted to take the least circuitous route. It doesn't hurt to hike an extra mile or two to avoid this. Once you hit the bare summit area, it gets into some excellent 3rd class climbing though.
Depart at 9 am, return by 12:45 pm, reason enough for a winning bet with UWJen. Bottoms up!
Fun climb on an SPS trip lead by Greg R. and Patty R.
