The herd path is pretty well developed beyond the Bull Pasture sign, with numerous cairns. I still managed to lose the trail once on the way up and down. Two and a half hours to the top from the parking area. A Border Patrol helicopter buzzed the summit when I was back in the parking lot at sunset.
Spent a wonderful day in Ajo with my brother and his wife. This is a great hike in the spring. The desert was full of flowers and we actually say running water in a few areas on the way up the trail. Compared to the Northeast where we are from, it's a totally different experience. This hike gives non-stop views all day long. We had no trouble following the cairns after Bull Pasture.
Went with the TLC Group out of Phoenix, AZ. Estes Canyon Trailhead up the standard route. It was steep, but not too taxing. Tremendous scenery.
Fairly cool day for this time of the year and a nice breeze at the top made it very pleasant. The hike itself was easier than expected with an easy to follow trail all the way to the top. Absolutely stunning scenery!
Ajo is a nice hike with interesting summit rocks. This was part of a 21 day hiking road-trip I did with Heather. Other peaks on this trip include:
Pinos, Sawmill, Aliso, Signal, Castle Dome, Miller, Superstition BM, Turtle HP, Old Woman, Granite, Cinder Cone 3894', Avawatz, Pahrump, Pinto, Nelson HP, Panamint Butte, Canyon Point, Shadow, Grapevine, Wahguye, Palmer, Stirling, Northshore, Black Mesa, Hamblin, and Little Virgin.
We also visited Heiroglyph Canyon, Marble Canyon, Cottonwood Canyon, Sheep Spring Canyon, Cadiz Dunes, Mojave Lava Tube, Parowan Gap Dinosaur tracks and numerous pertroglyph sites.
See the trip report with photos for more information.
A use trail leads all the way to the summit. Warm on the return leg.
Led this as part of a three day with Baboquivari, Stud Mountain, and Little Picacho when our attempt to climb Cerro Pinacate was shut down by "security concerns".
There's a trail all the way to the top and since several of us had been there before we tried to descend the gully to the west of the peak to make things more interesting. It's slightly brushy that way...
A very nice hike in one of the most beautiful desert environments I have ever seen!
Great times, nice area
The hike on the ridge to the summit was full of sun and awesome views. Perfect. Estes Canyon Trail in the evening is a nice end to the hike.
Temps in the 80s made the hike a bit warm, but comfortable with the breeze, plenty of water and sunscreen. Panoramic views and vibrant colors, plus the cacti in bloom, made this one a treat. Will definitely be back to the monument.
With Tom Becht, below. A very pretty area. Trip Report
Day 4 of the DPS-orama with Bob Burd. Incredible place.
Hiked standard Bull Pasture trail with my wife.
This peak gets a lot of DPS traffic, since it is on their list.
From the top I think we saw Mount Lemmon, 115 miles away.
Jonathan de Ferranti's computer panorama from Lemmon suggests
that this view is possible on a clear day.
My girlfriend Jan and i tackled this on a Spring Break vacation. Much easier than i thought. A well-cairned trail all the way to the top. Beautiful scenery and bearable air temps. It's a Desert 98 peak !
Outstanding day for a climb, and a lot of fun - and challenging, too. My trip report (www.surgent.net), Dec 31, 2006
This was a wonderful climb. The weather was comfortably cool and overcast. The views were spectacular.
