I wasn't looking forward to this one but had a good time despite my misgivings. The weather was especially cooperative; the rain ended five minutes before we started, the clouds dispersed three minutes from the top, and we heard the first thunder from a new set of clouds as we were packing up. We saw a few 4x4 enthusiasts but no other hikers.
I parked below the switchbacks so I did not get the official 3,000 vertical feet but 2,200 isn't too bad either. Nice day, a few others on the route but not many. Not many offroaders either.

I summited Antero after a wrong turn led me away from my goal of a northern climb of Tabeguache. I left the jeep trail and cut up the west ridge of Antero and got on the jeep trail that led to Mount White, believing that it would lead us over and down into Browns Creek. After discovering our error, and weighing in our tiredness from our previous days climb of the southeast ridge to Shavano we voted to climb Antero instead of climbing down to Browns Creek and heading up to Tabeguache. The easy switchbacks up Antero were much too inviting to turn down. I really enjoyed the climb.

As I’m finding out with the Sawatch Range is that all of the trails always start out with quite a bit of elevation gain in a short distance. Antero is no different the beginning is steep and is also a 4-wheel drive road. In fact the road goes all the way to13,700 feet.
The road is pretty rough and steep for about the first 800 feet and this was probably was the hardest part of the day. The road levels out for the next two miles then I had to cross Baldwin Creek. After that the road has numerous switchbacks and at about 13,000 feet I hit Antero’s ridge. I left the road and started going up the ridge. At 13,700 feet I met the road again and that’s where the 4-wheel drive road ends. Finally I had to scramble past some interesting rocks and made the last 500-foot ascent to the summit, which was also pretty steep. Antero was an easy hike just long, but it was also an entertaining hike. There is a lot more going on than just a bunch of hikers. They’re a lot of 4-wheel enthusiast and there were a lot of people digging for gems. Antero is famous for its gems. I don’t know what kind but It must be worth it for all those people to be digging for them. Antero also had some wonderful views, and it’s a very pretty mountain.
Well this was my first 14er and I had thought I might try to do them in alphabetical order.... :-)
It was a very long day hiking on the 4 wheel drive jeep road. About 500 feet from the top, one of my companions discovered that she had exercised induced asthma and stopped while the other two of us ran up to the summit. This was one hike where it felt good to finally be done! We went to a hot springs afterwards and just soaked for hours.

Rough 4x4 road. Parked at the turn off for Baldwin Lake (I think it is called). Trail was much longer than what it said in my guide book. Not a very pretty mountain in my eyes but easy hiking.

I drove to the end of the road and hiked across the ridge. It was very easy but I'm 54 and overweight (I climbed the east summit of Mt. Harvard from Frenchmen Creek the day before). The view would have been grand but I was in a cloud when I was on the summit.

7 hour round trip including a 30 minute delay for a hailstorm. The next year I drove the 9 mile road in a rented jeep and camped at 13,700 ft. in better weather (30 minute walk to summit), still hard to sleep with the cold and altitude.

After a night of summating shavano and t2, then north carbonate, a 13 'er just west of antero, I approached from the west then climbed the actual peak along the standard route from the sw around 9:30 in the morning under good conditions, descended from there along the jeep trail north down baldwin gulch and on to grouse canyon along the western slopes of mt. princeton and summated princeton at nightfall.
I have mountain biked and climbed Antero. I did my own route from the North but I don't recomend it for others, It involved allot of scree work and a very exsposed 5th class move. I desended the West Slopes route. I mountain biked the West Slope route and biked to 200 yards from the summit! I biked from the summit down and it was a classic ride highly reconmended for expert mountain bikers!

Mt. Antero was the third 14er bagged by my friend Duane and I in September 2000. Originally we had thought to drive up the Baldwin Gulch Road in my 9-year-old Toyota 4Runner, theorizing that the road couldn't do too much harm to my old vehicle. Although many other travellers seemed to agree with that assessment for their own vehicles, we decided instead to park at the main road and hike the 4,900 feet and 16 round-trip miles, if only for the training value. We moved very fast and had a fantastic walk in beautiful weather, and we never regretted our decision to walk even with all the other vehicles on the road.
