Route Climbed: Ski Area Trail? Date Climbed: September 20, 2003  Sucess!

My partner, Cornvallis, and I started out at the Sunrise parking lot "Trail". Hiked to the top. We saw five other people on the mountain and had the summit to ourselves. You couldn't ask for a clearer day. We could see south to Theilsen, north to Adams, west to Mary's Peak (highest point in the coast range), and east as far as the eye could see. Crystal clear and beautiful. We bombed down below the ski lift and to the truck only to be locked in. Those sneaky rangers close the gates at 6pm. We waited until Hal returned and escaped fine free. We were off to a hearty meal at the DesChutes Brewery in Bend. Watch out for the black beans with the enchilada...they are hot, hot, hot! Overall, a fantastic day!

Route Climbed: Sunrise Lodge to Summit Trail Date Climbed: August 17, 2003  Sucess!

A nice ,quick way to see all the surrounding volcanos in the Cascades from the top of Mt Bachelor. I have summited and skied this in the winter but thats cheating with the ski lift ! So my 13 yo daughter and I climbed this as part of our Cascade Volcano tour, car to car in 3 hours . Would be a great hike/ski in June .

Route Climbed: West slope via Ski Area Date Climbed: August 8, 2003  Sucess!

I followed the skyline express chair lift to it's end and the made my way up the scree and few snow patches to the west ridge. It was a pretty fun climb, but all the trash from the ski area and other people really detracted from the experience. At the top I had beautiful views of The Sisters, Broken Top, and Jefferson. the view to the south was pretty obscured by clouds. I returned via the Mt. Bachelor trail which was a lot cleaner. I saw a total of 2 people on the mountain, and was also able to get pretty close to a deer without it running away.

Route Climbed: Ski area trail from Sunrise Date Climbed: June 15, 2003  Sucess!

Sure, every year thousands make it to the top of Bachelor sitting on their butts in a chair! But, it was a fun climb and a great way to spend Father's Day with my 13 year-old son Jonathan. Walked up through the ski area from Sunrise Lodge. Great day. Sunny and just a few clouds to the north. We were in snow all the way to the summit. Wonderful view from the top. Had the whole mountain to ourselves except for a couple people who were climbing with their skis and another party of hikers. We were able to glissade a lot of the way down.

Route Climbed: Standard Date Climbed: July 25, 2002  Sucess!

From parking lot we followed a lift line up to some buildings and then straight to the summit. Hour and a half from parking lot to summit... rode the lift down from about midway to the parking lot =)

Route Climbed: North Slope Date Climbed: 8/12/01  Sucess!

I decided in the morning to summit something and Mount Bachelor is an easy drive from Portland and can be done in a few hours so I drove there, missed the trail to the summit, but headed up through the ski lift area (flashbacks to my Mt. Hood summit). Managed to make the top of the lifts through the loose scree and vague trails and found a trail through the rock field to the one glacier on Bachelor. From here I screwed up and decided to ascend the right side of the glacier without crampons. When it got too steep, I walked the edge of the glacier but it quickly became a deep gulley that went nowhere so I had to climb the loose ridge to my right. Each step loosened up the ash/rock mixture above me and I had to plan my steps to the rock ridge, move quickly and think "light" thoughts. Once on the rock ridge it's an easy scramble/steep hike to the summit. Enjoyed great views of Broken Top, all Three Sisters, Mount Washington and Mount Jefferson until a storm blew in from the south. I took the trail down under the thunder and made it back to my Jeep unscathed. It makes for a nice day hike/summit and there are few people above the ski lift area. I had the mountain to myself and loved it.
