My first successful spring snow climb - but along with it came a learning experience. Chose not to take the snowshoes, had a great ascent but by the afternoon the snow became soft and post holed (I think I used that term right) for about 1 1/2 hours with the car in sight. Drove home in my underwear with the heat blasting because my pants were soaked.
No shortage of people on the way up when I descended. It was a clear day with great vis. No wind.
I grew up in Evergreen and have climbed Bierstadt 15+ times including in the winter, solo, night time, across the "Sawtooth", from the west, as an altitude "speed" training for Nepal, etc. My favorite was with my younger brother on the 26th of December (2001 or 2002?) when we summitted at 2300 hrs (11PM). Wanted to add this to my summit logs. Although it's a "trainer", go prepared- I've been on the "Tooth" when lightning was hitting Bierstadt and am lucky not to be a ghost. Having been trained by an Alpine Rescue Team trainer, I can vouch that it's still a deadly peak. Watch the weather, and enjoy those west slopes in the summer- the wildflowers and alpine views are awesome!
Climbed West Slopes. Continued on across the Sawtooth to Evans. Weather was great - super stable. On the descent got an education in the willows...
Peak number 2. Didn't go across the Sawtooth, too spent once I hit summit. 52 more to go.
seems like this mountain goes straight up with little redeeming qualities other than you've climbed a 14er. I summitted in the winter, maybe it would be better in summer.
Have climbed this a few times. Summer of 02 and then twice in winter type conditions for prep to Deanli. Just having the cold, wind, altitude, and heavy pack. Always a good trip.
Great day! Climbed with my mom on my birthday...her first 14er and she loved it!!
Decided it was time to brave the crowds and do a front range 14er.
my first winter 14er.
Climbed this one one my 13th birthday
Climbed the west slopes and then scrambled over the sawtooth to Evans
Great day to be in the mountains, the storms held off for us. The wildflowers were beautiful...
Climbed the Sawtooth connecting Evans for an enjoyable, albeit very crowded day in the Rockies.
West Slopes main trail on a Sunday - VERY crowded. Clear, fair weather and light wind. My wife's first 14er - nice day out and good acclimation for later in season. Next time up to Guanella we'll probably go to Squaretop --- all day we kept looking wistfully through the crowds at it's calm and quiet.
For my sea level lungs! First 14er used as acclimatization for Mt Elbert. Great weather, windy up top!
This was by far the easiest 14er I've done, considering you are very close to the summit when you start out. Still, it was a great day out with friends! I would say it's a good starter peak, but I wouldn't want to lead anyone to believe all 14ers are this easy.
Finally some good weather after three previous attempts. A beautiful day on the mountain!
first to sign the registry this day - also caught a sweeeeet sunrise!!
My very first 14er, and what a great experience! Skies were blue, the sun was out, and the trail from Guanella Pass was jampacked full of dayhikers from Denver. We experienced a very crowded summit, and rain on the way down. Regardless, the experience was enjoyable enough to prompt an addiction to climbing. Thank you Bierstadt!
