If Clingman's Dome had no tower...  Sucess!

...I imagine it would look something like the summit of Mt. Collins. Tagged this summit along with Clingman's Dome and Mts. Love and Buckley on a beautiful, sunny, 40-degree day in February. I'd hoped to travel over snow, but there was none; the trail was alternately wet and crunchy with thin ice. As a fellow hiker told me, you never know what you'll get from winter in the Smokies.

Sunny morning on Collins  Sucess!

Started at the Road Prong Trail parking lot for a nice 7 mile there and back. Beautiful, clear day in the 80's for the morning hike, a rarity at this time of year. Strenuous, but not overly difficult.

On the way to Clingmans Dome  Sucess!

Just a bump on the AT but comfortable compared to the sweltering heat in the lowlands.

AT NoBo section hike   Sucess!

I suppose you could brig a metal detector to try to find the USGS marker, but...

Bonus  Sucess!

On the path to Clingmans Dome this added elevation gain and loss really added to difficulty of long day. Fun though

Icy Woods walk  Sucess!

I was spending Thanksgiving weekend with some friends in Knoxville and we decided to take a hike in the Park. We got to NEwfound Gap at sunrise and there was a couple of inches of fresh snow. We headed south on the AT with no particular destination on mind...Clingman's dome was a little out of reach for some of the people in our group and we were not prepared for the icy trail, what wold have been a pleasant fairly easy walk was a little dicey in places. It was a nice walk and we turned around in the area of the summit. Like others have posted we couldn't find the USGS marker but we thought it was because of the snow.

Along with Clingman's Dome  Sucess!

Did a few times on way up to Clingman's Dome. Not exactly sure where the real summit is, I think it may require a little bushwacking. Passed by near the top anyway.

On the way to Clingmans  Sucess!

Climbed to the top twice on the way to and on the way back from Clingman's Dome. As others have said, relatively uneventful and the USGS marker is elusive.

To Clingmans  Sucess!

Climbed over the top twice, once while ascending Clingmans Dome and once while descending it. Can't really tell when you cross the 'actual' summit, but there is a flat spot in the AT that is easy to recognize that you are on top of the mountain.

I hiked to the top of Mount Collins after visiting Clingman's Dome. I couldn't find the USGS marker, either.

MST 2007  Sucess!

I stayed at the Mt. Collins shelter after hiking up from Deep Creek the night before so I tagged this summit with little additional effort on my way to Clingmans Dome and the end of the Mountain to Sea Trail.

Route Climbed: Via the AT Date Climbed: October 9, 2004  Sucess!

The hardest part about this mountain is locating the USGS marker. The steady accumulation of moss and brush have apparantly hidden the marker. The hightpoint in the 100ft. ridge is apparent. Jennifer and I hiked this hill on a damp, mist laden, typical Smoky Mountain fall day.
