Hit this as part of loop trail run in late afternoon, finishing at Mitchell just before sundown.
Nice hike after summiting Mt. Mitchell.
Cooler peak than Mitchell given that you have to walk to get there. The views are pleasant as well!
With Mount Mitchell, Clingmans Dome & Mount Collins.
Enjoyed the Autumn views from this peak on a sunny day with a cool breeze. From Mitchell.
Nice little jaunt down from Mitchell parking area. Super foggy
Very nice hike!
As everyone else said, as long as you are on Mitchell, might as well do this lovely hike
Nice trail to the peak. A bit tricky with the rocks if your shoes have no grip and the rocks are wet. Otherwise, much better than Mitchell.
Weather for me was windy, low clouds that gave me some fog. Otherwise, upper 50F temps, no rain. Spent a few minutes there before heading back down.
Climbed along with Gibbes, Hallback, and Mitchell via spectacular 9-mile loop. #21 on my SB6K list.
I enjoyed this peak much more than Mitchell. No commercialization, no drive-up tourists and lovely views all around. All I could hear was the wind and all I could smell were the Frasier Firs.
Started with Mitchell and then followed the crest trail to Gibbs & back. Long windy day.
Great views from here.
The last of three peaks in the Blacks. I hiked up Hallback and Gibbes earlier in the day! Wait actually four, I forgot about Mt Mitchell.
Started at the Visitor's center and took the Old Mt. Mitchell trail to the summit, and then on to Mt. Craig, Big Tom, Balsam Cone, and Cattail Pk., and back the same way, plus the nature trail, for 3116' of gain.
This was great. If you have a family and want a hike, but don't want to do Mitchell from bottom to top, this is a nice diversion. You lose elevation then gain it back in both directions, so keep that in mind for the little ones.
After summiting Mitchell on the Mitchell Trail, we took the Crest Trail to hit Craig and Big Tom. Amazing up there!
Summited Mitchell and walked over to bag this too. Weather was good so I recall, unlike 364 days later when I did Mitchell again in pouring rain. Great views.
Black Mountain to Mt Mitchell then on to Mount Craig - 6647', Big Tom - 6580', Balsam Cone 6596', and Cattail Peak 6584'. About a 16 mile day. It was muddy and cloudy, but not cold.
