Nice trail to the peak. A bit tricky with the rocks if your shoes have no grip and the rocks are wet. Otherwise, much better than Mitchell.
Weather for me was windy, low clouds that gave me some fog. Otherwise, upper 50F temps, no rain. Spent a few minutes there before heading back down.

Climbed along with Gibbes, Hallback, and Mitchell via spectacular 9-mile loop. #21 on my SB6K list.

Mitchell/Craig/Big Tom
I enjoyed this peak much more than Mitchell. No commercialization, no drive-up tourists and lovely views all around. All I could hear was the wind and all I could smell were the Frasier Firs.

Beautiful November Day!
The last of three peaks in the Blacks. I hiked up Hallback and Gibbes earlier in the day! Wait actually four, I forgot about Mt Mitchell.

#2
Started at the Visitor's center and took the Old Mt. Mitchell trail to the summit, and then on to Mt. Craig, Big Tom, Balsam Cone, and Cattail Pk., and back the same way, plus the nature trail, for 3116' of gain.

One of my favorite views
This was great. If you have a family and want a hike, but don't want to do Mitchell from bottom to top, this is a nice diversion. You lose elevation then gain it back in both directions, so keep that in mind for the little ones.

Beautiful region/hike
After summiting Mitchell on the Mitchell Trail, we took the Crest Trail to hit Craig and Big Tom. Amazing up there!

beautiful weather
Summited Mitchell and walked over to bag this too. Weather was good so I recall, unlike 364 days later when I did Mitchell again in pouring rain. Great views.
