Great day
Black Mountain to Mt Mitchell then on to Mount Craig - 6647', Big Tom - 6580', Balsam Cone 6596', and Cattail Peak 6584'. About a 16 mile day. It was muddy and cloudy, but not cold.

combo #5
2nd birthday in a row spent here on the East Coast hiking in the Appalachian Mountains. Did this one with Mt. Mitchell, Big Tom, and others along the Deep Gap trail. A little chilly, and windy, but a beautiful day nonetheless.

superb views
Drove to the top of Mitchell with "the old folks" and my brother. Frost in the trees made an awesome scenery. Hiked to Mt. Craig and Big Tom and back.

The Easy Way Too...
Climbed this with my dog "Bear" on a 4-mile jaunt from Mount Mitchell. Hope to come back and hike the whole Black Mountain crest when I have a weekend. Sunny and cool.

The Easy Way...
Climbed from the Deep Gap Trailhead near Mt. Mitchell. The trail was muddy with plenty of slick rocks due to all the recent rain. We had partially clear skies to Mt. Craig and then the low lying clouds took over so we decided to shorten our day and stopped shortly after Balsam Cone.

hiked after Mitchell
Hiked the 1.4 miles along the ridge line that separates Mitchell from Craig. Beautiful hike through the spruce woods. Pretty easy "strenuous" hike. It had been quite cloudy, but the clouds lifted so we had some nice views.

This beautiful, high, cone peak has a great view. Amazing scenic sub-alpine area in the south.

Deep Gap to Cattail
Best view along the ridge from Craig to Cattail. The clouds parted long enough on our return trip for some nice panoramas. Fun peak.

My Namesake Peak...
Considering this peak shares my first name, I kept telling people that I would summit it even if it were in terrible weather conditions. Both things came true: I summited the peak and the weather took a nasty turn... raining hitting me sideways. However, my GPS device and map showed Big Tom only a short distance away so I continued on to there before turning around. Plus, I had already summited Mount Mitchell shortly beforehand.

Route: Black Mountain Crest Trail
After visiting Mt. Mitchell, we headed out on the Black Mountain Crest Trail to Cattail Peak & back. Beautiful weather. We loved the views, but certainly (since we live in an arid area) we really enjoy the rain forest.
Crossed (rain, mist and sleet) on my loop---12 hrs. 1 hr to Horse Rock trail, then up, over to the Bowlen's Creek end of Ridge Crest Trail, turned and went to Mitchell, before coming back to Deep Gap, down most of Colbert's Ridge, and then 'bushwack' to Locust Creek and White Oak Creek.
