Rock pile  Sucess!

As everyone else says, this is a huge pile of talus. Mostly challenging (for beginners/out-of-shape folks) from cardio perspective, thus making it good warmup/acclimation hike.

From Tioga lake campground  Sucess!

Headed west over meadows to Tioga pass, then took the trail to the top, aiming for the rock cairns. Amazing view from the top over Tuolumne across the San Joaquin valley to the coast range / Mt Diablo. Could almost see the Pacific.

From Tioga Pass  Sucess!

Date approximate, definitely summer of '91. After all these years, this is still the tallest mountain whose summit I've reached (not counting the drive to Mount Evans!). Hoping to rectify that this year, but I still have very fond memories of the hike to Mount Dana.

Beautiful Sunrise  Sucess!

Started from Tioga Pass Ranger Station at 4. Got up to the little cairn at 5, and made it to the top around 6 just in time for a beautiful sunrise!

From Tioga Pass  Sucess!

Pretty short hike from Tioga Pass. The rangers are currently trying to restore and improve the trail to the summit. So there's a trail all the way up now.

Nice Hike  Sucess!

I agree that the view of Mono Lake is spectacular from up there. The little lakes in the valley on the way up were also picturesque and I have nice "wallpaper" for my PC from one of them. We were also treated to gliders soaring above us when we were at the summit. All in all a trip I'll never forget.

1978 & 2011  Sucess!

In '78 via a contrived linkage of snow and ice smears put together by my partner. Dana Couloir in 2011 with perfect snow conditions

Great for people watching  Sucess!

As my fiancee was waiting for me back at June Lake I had to make my climb quick so I took the trail up. The view on the way up especially of the Cathedral Range made it worth it. It is worth noting all the inexperienced and unprepared people who attempt this. Watching them is its own reward.

Scramble from Tioga  Sucess!

Unimpressive view of the peak during the climb but the unexpected view of Mono Lake made the scramble totally worth it.

A large pile of rocks  Sucess!

I just remember a lot of rocks. Very cool colors though, one minute you are on red rocks, the next, you are on green rocks, then purple rocks. Somewhat crowded, but nice views.

Awesome View  Sucess!

Spectacular views all the way up! Light wind on the summit made it a perfect place for lunch.

Beating the heat  Sucess!

I had plans to hike Half Dome but 100 degree heat drove me out of Yosemite Valley up to Tuolumne meadows. Mount Dana sounded like a good dayhike. The heat had been generating thunderstorms around 1 pm every afternoon so I started before 7 am, made the summit around 9:15, enjoyed a snack and the spectacular views before hurrying back down the trail reaching my car around noon or so. I was surprised by the number of hikers I saw heading up late in the morning. It seemed unlikely they would make it back down before the daily thunderstorms started. I guess Yosemite being a national park means you get a whole lot of hikers who don't really know what they're doing.

Standard Route  Sucess!

Trail from Yosemite east entrance is in good condition. Virtually no snow. Some class 2 scrambling but not for very long stretches.

Northwest Slope  Sucess!

From Tioga Pass Entrance Station, across the meadow with almost half the route through the woods interrupted by snow. Stayed on route to just below the plateau but then freestyled to the top, partly over snow, partly one stepping-stone at a time. Passed one other soul on his way down but the two of us were the grand total to the top for the day. The wind died for a bit and a little bird joined me to add to the experience of the incredible panorama.

So Many Cairns  Sucess!

Many misleading cairns on the easiest route. You'll save time if you just pick your line up the slope and go. Great views and worth your time.

Cross Training - Up Dana  Sucess!

Up and down Mt. Dana with my bike-racing family - a little cross training between race seasons. Up the West Route from Tioga Pass. In a word... Awesome!
