I always wanted to climb this one

I remember someone in sitka telling me that a prankster lit some tires on fire inside the caldera back in the 80's as a joke, any idea if thats true?

Re: I always wanted to climb this one

Haha, that is funny. I haven't heard it, but I will ask my Sitka native friend about it. He would remember.

Good start

I saw this mountain from an airplane, and it looked beautiful. I'd love to see some more detailed route information, and trailhead information. How long a hike are we talking about?

Re: Good start

Hi hgrapid, I will be adding route info when I get a chance as well as some more photos and a trip report. Check back in a couple of days.

I'd heard the same story

I'd heard the same story as calebEOC about the tires burning in the crater to make it look like the extinct volcano had come back to life.

Re: I'd heard the same story

I had a chance to talk to a guy from Sitka, he told me the guy who did it was named "Porky Bacall", and he was a legend in Sitka. Apparently it made national news in the late 70's.

Here's a link to a website that describes the April Fools Day prank in 1974.
