HP #1 of 4 on this trip  Sucess!

Drove all night from Grantsville, UT. Got to the trailhead at 2:00am. Slept in back of my van. Woke up at 6:30 am to a full parking lot. Passed quite a few people on the way to the top. Best part of hike was leapfrogging two girls in giraffe onsies. They also brought an entire watermelon to share with everyone at the summit. Beautiful day for topping out on the highest point in Colorado. This was highpoint 18? for me?

My 5th State High Point  Sucess!

An enjoyable though not easy hike from the North Elbert trailhead. Nice views of Mt Massive (a far more impressive looking, if somewhat shorter, summit) and other mountains to the east and north. Very windy on top. Got back to the tree-line just as we heard the first clap of thunder. The 5th state high point I've hiked after California, Nevada, Virginia and New Mexico.

my first fourteener...  Sucess!

via standard North Elbert TH (trail 1484). I have neglected Colorado, but no more - what a beautiful state to visit! With my friend Paul - we started 07:00, summited 10:40. Weather was fine but distant views were obscured by smoke from various western wildfires. We descended along Black Cloud route to point 13963 - which in my home state would deserve a name. We retreated the way we came - so, in effect we summited TWICE in the same day.

North Mt. Elbert Trail  Sucess!

My wife and I used the North Mount Elbert Trail. We were surprised by the fresh snow up top in August. Great trail the whole way!

Mount Elbert roundtour (South Trail - North Trail)  Sucess!

We've planned to run Mt Elbert from the South Elbert Trailhead by the South Trail. Because of the alltitude we've hiked to the summit. Descended the North trail and took the Colorado Trail to get back to the South Elbert Trailhead. A great roundtrip.

Tom Petty  Sucess!

Great hike with wife Amy, loosely following the snowy South Elbert Trail. Perhaps one of the most gorgeous days in the mountains in a long time. Caught Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers at Red Rocks on our way home. Awesome.

Quick Trip  Sucess!

Made a quick trip into Colorado. 8 hours of driving, 4 hours of sleep, 10 hours of climbing, with another 8 hours of driving. Did this one with a 45lb pack on my back. The many false summits toward the end were definitely brutal.

Standard route  Sucess!

One of my first 14ers, back in 1994 or 1995.

Via the Black Cloud Trail  Sucess!

Bluebird day, 8:00 AM start, summit by noon, back down by 2:00 PM. After the beautiful aspen grove, the trail was steep. My friend was not a fan of this route - he couldn't make it beyond the east ridge of South Elbert, and he started back down the mountain while my dog and I continued on to Mt. Elbert.

North Trail w/ back seat bivouac  Sucess!

I have to admit morale was low when the alarm clock rang at 3:15 am and I found myself crammed sidewise across the back seat of my rental car in the North Trailhead parking lot with rain drumming on the roof. That implies I was sleeping, but I wasn't.
Despite the rough night, I made it to the summit, and without seeing another soul. The crux was my sea-level-shriveled lungs panting out the last 600 vertical feet. Even with the panting it was only three hours up.

South TH   Sucess!

We were able to drive up to about 10,500, just short of the official 4wd TH for the south TH. The route is straightforward, very scenic, our second Colorado 14er on a 4 day peakbagging visit from California.

Really a 14er? Too Easy!  Sucess!

What a great way to be introduced to Fourteening in Colorado. A nice easy walk up. This one I could do in the dark. Gorgeous views of Mt Massive and the Mosquito Range. Being very watchful for thunderstorms, takes a while to get the handle of how often it rains in CO. Great for starting. Did Columbia the next day. Compared to Sierra 14ers, which all have long boulder field approaches, this is so easy. The Sawatch Range is very interesting.

Mt. Elbert - CO Highpoint  Sucess!

Quick up and down trip. We arrived just after sunrise and didn't meet too many others on the trail going up but the trail was packed on our way down.

Solo Venture  Sucess!

Nice scenery, probably stayed on summit longer than it took to get there. A little snow but not enough!

Nothing but a steep hike. A few other hikers that day, all alone at summit.
