Rwhitt

Arrived and spent the night camped at the Twin Lakes campground near the trail head. Thunderstorms and rain much of the afternoon and evening.

Due to early morning showers, I did not begin my ascent until 10:30 AM. Climbed to 13,500 elevation as the clouds began to rebuild.

Since this was my first experience with a Colorado 14-Teener, I chose to retreat rather than risk being exposed to the danger of a summer afternoon thunder and lightening storm. It was my first and thus far only attempt at summitting Mt. Elbert.

I hope to return for another attempt and this grand old chunk of rock.

Peaceful climb  Sucess!

Nice and peaceful after the day before... Had a beer at the summit, and took a few hits of our bong 200 feet below, away from the kiddies at the top. 9 hours RT from Twin Lakes, including some lingering at the summit.

Spring Snow Ascent  Sucess!

Great day - spotty weather - bad at times, but we stuck it out and made it! Two friends from PA went with me - we had a great climb.

Nice Family Hike  Sucess!

My 21st 14er, and the first with 3 generations of climbers: me and my wife, our daughter, and our granddaughter, who bagged her first. Clouds threatened, but didn't really unleash anything. (I want to do it again as a run, and see how long it takes.)

Winter ascent of Elbert  Sucess!

South Mt. Elbert trail (East ridge). Great weather, just a little wind. The snow softened up on the descent and we were sinking pretty deep even with snowshoes. Only saw one other person.

Elbert in July  Sucess!

This was my first 14er. I'm not sure about the year, it might have been 1984 or 1985. Even though I was there in July, it was cold in the morning and some snow fell near the summit.

Nice intro to world of 14rs  Sucess!

First time above 14k. First (and only) time experiencing the pain of snowblindness. Approaching the summit and viewing the sea of peaks beyond was absolutely amazing!

south TH  Sucess!

Part of the 14ers.com winter gathering. Out of 28+ people who showed up that morning, I believe 14-15 of us summited.
This was my third winter summit of Elbert and sixth time summiting overall. Couldn't ask for better weather!

Great Solo Hike  Sucess!

A great day for a hike--blue skies and a light breeze all the way. I really enjoyed the hike below treeline and the summit views were great. In spite of it being a Wednesday, the trail was quite crowded with people heading up as I was headed down.

Midnight summit  Sucess!

We decided to beat the lightning storms/weather by climbing at night. The next day it was completely shrouded in clouds and lightning storms. I managed to get a few minute long exposures by moonlight. On a side note...my blue heeler puppy went with us and got to be carried down part of the way.

14,433'  Sucess!

Southeast Ridge, 10 miles. Elbert is a good hike with great views. I've done both the Northeast Ridge & the Southeast Ridge. I'd recommend the Southeast Ridge, it is much less crowded on any given day.

Good times  Sucess!

A decent hike that was pretty uneventful until we met tons of people on the top. A good one to check off the list.

Hiked this one after Longs as the 2nd CO 14er. We didn't see anyone till we arrived at the summit.
