Snowy

Attempted with two other friends. Even with snowshoes, we were still sinking to our knees every step in the trees. We set up camp below tree line, but ended up coming down 1 hour later due to a friend's worsening sprained ankle and mild altitude sickness setting in. We will come back!

Soloed with the summer time crowds  Sucess!

This climb has the most false summits I have experienced to date! Very satisfying climb with great views.

Long Day  Sucess!

This was a great hike from the South trailhead. There were tons of people up there, but there usually is ona 14er. Took us quite a while because the friend that went with me was a little sick that day and started to feel worse and worse on the way down

A Hail of a Time  Sucess!

Started from the Black Cloud TH. I wouldn't climb Elbert any other way. For solitude, this route can't be beat as I didn't see anyone else until I reached the summit. I took Variation 1 down (which descends the bowl between Bull Hill and South Elbert. No trail to be found and it was talus and scree until treeline. A storm blew in and I got hailed on for about an hour.

# 7  Sucess!

This was my 7th climb of Elbert. Standard route. Although we had snow, there was little coverage for this late in the year.

First Time  Sucess!

This was my first time climbing Mount Elbert. It was from the old trailhead that shared parking with Mount Massive. Most of my climbs of Elbert have been on this standard route. Although on one climb we approached from the Independence Pass road and went over South Elbert and on the return Bull Hill.

I had great time up there by myself. Wicked bad snow storm on the way down! Awesome mountains of ours!

Elbert summit party

Summited via standard East Ridge route. Wife and I were the #2 and #3 people on the summit. Within 45 minutes, there were no fewer than 30 people and 6-8 dogs on top. Glad we started early!

South Mt. Elbert Trailhead

2nd 14er. Again climbed with my neighbor, friend and guide Scott Arnett. My memories of this climb are having Scott yell up to me saying " Slow down you goat" as I left the trail at about 12,500 feet and went straight up to the summit through boulders and snow fields. I felt very strong. After an enjoyable hour and a half on the summit mother nature let us know it was time to retreat by dumping a large amount of snow on us turning it into a white out within about 20 minutes.

Great weather, great hike.  Sucess!

First time back in the 14er groove since July. Great friends and great times in the mountains though. The weather was beautiful. Blue bird skies and nice and warm. Fall is definately the best time of year to get up Elbert!

Mixed feelings  Sucess!

Elbert was the first 14er I did solo or without my faithful companion, Odin, my Golden Retriever who joined me for 17 14er summits. It felt strange hiking without him.

early snowstorm

Stopped short at 13650 ft. 1/2 mile below summit due to hiking solo and snow on trail at 11:30 AM. Felt fine, but better safe than sorry. Will have to come back and do it again next year.
