With the Fam, Amy & Jonathan   Sucess!
Utah Ultra Prominence Peak 5 of 7 - Mt. Ellen w/the Fam & Crawley’s (+ Ellen Peak solo)
2 left: Mt. Peale and Ibapah Peak. Should be easy in Colorado as they only have one Ultra (5k+) Prominence Peak ;)
Shin incision held up. The 800mg of iBuProfen helped ;)
Carried Journey to the summit. I went and bagged Ellen Peak while the others started down. Fun to be on top of a mountain again

Fun day in the Henry Mtns  Sucess!

Wonderful day in the Henry Mountains. My first time here. Parked at Bull Creek Pass and did the 1.8 miles to the summit in 37 minutes. Then headed over to Mt. Ellen Peak and spotted a herd of 30 buffalo in the meadow down the ridge to the East, so I scrambled down to see how close I could get to them. Turns out they're not like Buffalo in Yellowstone. They stampeded away when I got no closer than 500 yards. They dashed off into the trees to hide, and hid well! I headed back up across the west side of Mt. Ellen Peak back to the summit of Mt. Ellen, and then back to the car to get Niko some water, and then went up the ridge to South Ridge Summit.

A Little Gusty  Sucess!

First one to the summit on this day but many people were on the way up as I descended. Minus the wind, this was a pleasant walk up. Again, the views were outstanding in all directions from San Juan Mountains in Colorado and Chuska Mountains in New Mexico to the Wasatch Plateau in Utah.

Mt. Ellen & the Henry Mountains  Sucess!

Coming up from Crescent Creek, we drove to about a mile past Wickiup Pass before hitting snow drifts. Not much snow this year! The hike to the summit is all out in the open with great 360 degree views. Nice mailbox! Beautiful day! Now I've been up the Big 3 in the Henrys.

From Bull Creek  Sucess!

So beautiful to see the desert environment from an alpine one.

The summit mailbox includes a copy of The Two Towers to write it, so I loved that.

Mount Ellen  Sucess!

My car deserved the celebratory summit beer on this adventure... pushed my Subaru Impreza to the limit with lots of wash crossings and steep, rocky sections. Winds at Bull Creek Pass were fierce and the first section of trail was rather difficult to walk on due to the gusts! Astounding views... you really get the feel of being on a super prominent peak from the top.

High adventure  Sucess!

Getting there is the hardest part. The ridge line itself is broad, open, and fantastic. Took me an hour and forty minutes from the TH to Mt. Ellen Peak at the end. Surprisingly, there was a couple there visiting from Alberta (Sonny and Zosha) but as we saw from the TH register, this area is NOT heavily visited.

Mt. Ellen + Peak  Sucess!

Hiked up and got the county high point, then continued on to Mt. Ellen Peak. Torrey the dog accompanied me.

Prescott College Wilderness Orientation  Sucess!

Led a new student group to the top of Mount Ellen with Janet Ross, now the director of the Four Corners School of Outdoor Education in Monticello. We were both about 21 or 22 at the time... We could see forever that day, from the San Rafael Swell to the La Sals, the San Juans, and the Bears Ears.

The October course really started with that afternoon climb of Ellen, then led us all over the northern Henrys, including two nights sitting out a snowstorm under Pennell in a miner's cabin.

Bull Creek Pass  Sucess!

High, lonesome camp at the pass. Early morning stroll up over summit, and yes the addition of Ellen Peak is well worth it. Comes under the heading of "I'll never be closer".

Windy  Sucess!

I was able to drive all the way to Bull Creek Pass from the east side but there were snow patches from 7700' on and the road was pretty slick near the top. Virtually no snow on the trail to Ellen. Continued on to Ellen Peak and then descended to the NW to the saddle with Deer Heaven (10687), ascended Deer Heaven, took a sloping traverse back to the north saddle of Ellen, and then back to the start. The wind was brutal, but otherwise conditions were great. I also climbed Bull Mt, P8300, and Wickiup Ridge the day before and in my opinion, Bull Mt is far more impressive looking and more of a challenge than Mount Ellen.

Mount Ellen  Sucess!

Drove up to Bull Creek Pass from outside of Hanksville. Very enjoyable hike along the ridge. Continued on to Mount Ellen Peak as well. Amazing views in all directions.

Long dirt road  Sucess!

Drove in from the west. Road in good shape but certainly some risk of cutting a tire. No snow left. Hike itself was trivial. Skipped the second peak as I had to get back to the family. In this part of the country the canyons are more scenic than the mountains

From Sawmill Basin Road  Sucess!

We were able to get to around 10,000' from the Bull Creek (Sawmill Basin Road) side with our Subaru Outback NP albeit a little muddy. Could have made it to the pass but snow drifts entirely blocked the road so no one could. We saw tire tracks very close to the pass from the west side so that's probably the way to go early season. Went up South Summit over to Mt Ellen & then Ellen Peak. We also climbed several of the lower peaks listed on LOJ with Bull Mtn being a 1K prom peak & UN 8300 being enjoyable with the neat class 3 summit block. Thanks seano for the beta!

Standard route  Sucess!

Parked around 9,700' where snow blocked the road, then hiked on up. The lower Ellen to the north is well worth visiting for the old building foundations. Also tagged the peak with the radio tower south of the road on the way home, which was "meh." Trip report.

Desert Mountains  Sucess!

This is the second ultra-prominence peak I climbed in 2013, and the fourth peak I climbed with Ammon Hatch. I am particularly fond of Ellen for many reasons, one of them being the awesome views of my favorite landscape: the desert.

Oh, and I love that the log at the summit consisted largely of pages from The Two Towers.

From Bull Creek Pass  Sucess!

An absolutely perfect fall day! Endless views of Utah's canyon country along our route up Mt. Ellen and Ellen Peak. Also got to see a few bison on the slopes below us while hiking.

can you say solitude?  Sucess!

I drove through Capital Reef NP after spending the night in Beaver, UT and approached from the west side of the Henry Mtns. I got started hiking at 12:30 and visited Mt Ellen as well as Mt. Ellen Peak. It was very windy and sunny with a lot of storm clouds forming in the distant western skies. After hitting the two summits, I drove the Burr Trail to Boulder, UT where I missed a stop sign and subsequently met a fine deputy from the Garfield County Sheriff's Office. Finished the day with dinner at Escalante Outfitters in Escalante and then got a motel room for the night in Mt. Carmel Junction.
