Tired of drivingSince I drove from north of SLC that same morning I got real tired of it all by the time I hit the stream and parked at the 7750 foot contour. It was less than 9 miles to the summit of the northern summit, so roughly 17.5 miles total. Got home around 10pm. There had been a massive storm in the area the day before and tons of mud had washed down the stream

Ellen TrioStarted at Wickiup Pass from my campsite and walked the road. A little bit of snow on the road in the trees near Bull Creek Pass but some people drove through it. Hiked up both northern summits and the southern summit of Ellen and back down to camp. Great views of the desert all around.

chilly and windyAfter spending a week in the desert slot canyons and 95 F temperatures, we found the 29 F temp and 35 mph winds quite the change. Glad that I remembered our parkas.
We approached from Hanksville via the Sawmill Basin road. We had no difficulty in our 4Runner, nor should anyone have clearance issues in most vehicles. Don't know about Ferraris. Some shale patches, but easily negotiated. No mud on the road for us. 1 hour from Hanksville to the trailhead. We returned via the same route, as local inquiry revealed that the descent down the west side to Notom-Bullfrog road is rougher.
Many wind shelters on the summit ridge, so it must occasionally blow fiercely here.

Stale DoritosAfter an arduous 1+ hour stroll, I found myself on the summit, face to face with a bag of stale Doritos. I survived, and lived to tell the tale. Beautiful place, BTW.

Mount EllenAfter setting up camp at Lonesome Beaver, Kim and I climbed Mount Ellen, starting at 5:00 PM. We made the summit well before sunset. The views were OK, but it was still smokey. It was still better than back home though. We made it back to the trailhead right when it got dark. Lots of raptors (hawks and falcons) were out.

Shin incision held up. The 800mg of iBuProfen helped ;)
Carried Journey to the summit. I went and bagged Ellen Peak while the others started down. Fun to be on top of a mountain again

Fun day in the Henry MtnsWonderful day in the Henry Mountains. My first time here. Parked at Bull Creek Pass and did the 1.8 miles to the summit in 37 minutes. Then headed over to Mt. Ellen Peak and spotted a herd of 30 buffalo in the meadow down the ridge to the East, so I scrambled down to see how close I could get to them. Turns out they're not like Buffalo in Yellowstone. They stampeded away when I got no closer than 500 yards. They dashed off into the trees to hide, and hid well! I headed back up across the west side of Mt. Ellen Peak back to the summit of Mt. Ellen, and then back to the car to get Niko some water, and then went up the ridge to South Ridge Summit.

A Little GustyFirst one to the summit on this day but many people were on the way up as I descended. Minus the wind, this was a pleasant walk up. Again, the views were outstanding in all directions from San Juan Mountains in Colorado and Chuska Mountains in New Mexico to the Wasatch Plateau in Utah.

Mt. Ellen & the Henry MountainsComing up from Crescent Creek, we drove to about a mile past Wickiup Pass before hitting snow drifts. Not much snow this year! The hike to the summit is all out in the open with great 360 degree views. Nice mailbox! Beautiful day! Now I've been up the Big 3 in the Henrys.

Mount EllenMy car deserved the celebratory summit beer on this adventure... pushed my Subaru Impreza to the limit with lots of wash crossings and steep, rocky sections. Winds at Bull Creek Pass were fierce and the first section of trail was rather difficult to walk on due to the gusts! Astounding views... you really get the feel of being on a super prominent peak from the top.

High adventureGetting there is the hardest part. The ridge line itself is broad, open, and fantastic. Took me an hour and forty minutes from the TH to Mt. Ellen Peak at the end. Surprisingly, there was a couple there visiting from Alberta (Sonny and Zosha) but as we saw from the TH register, this area is NOT heavily visited.

Prescott College Wilderness OrientationLed a new student group to the top of Mount Ellen with Janet Ross, now the director of the Four Corners School of Outdoor Education in Monticello. We were both about 21 or 22 at the time... We could see forever that day, from the San Rafael Swell to the La Sals, the San Juans, and the Bears Ears.
The October course really started with that afternoon climb of Ellen, then led us all over the northern Henrys, including two nights sitting out a snowstorm under Pennell in a miner's cabin.

Bull Creek PassHigh, lonesome camp at the pass. Early morning stroll up over summit, and yes the addition of Ellen Peak is well worth it. Comes under the heading of "I'll never be closer".
