short hike, with long drive
Thanks to Greg & Kathleen (who drove us from our campsite within earshot of highway 6 along Price river) in their Polaris RZR. Greg managed to drive across the river, while the rest of us waded it with no problem. The drive was long, dusty, nasty and very scenic. The hike itself was very short. We continued drive along the road and topped point 6569 too. With Wasatch Mountain Club group.

Mount Elliott
Part of a 4 day/52 mile backpacking trip.
November 21
Kessler and I started at the 4wd crossing of the Price River and hiked to the base of Mount Elliot where we found a really nice place to camp that had good views. We found that the 4wd road was in pretty good condition so if we had a shuttle, we could have drove this part. It was a nice hike though, and had great views.
November 22
In the morning, we climbed Mount Elliot, which is a spectacular viewpoint. The Class 3 scramble was interesting as well.
After the climb, we packed up camp and walked the ATV track towards Short Canyon before heading off cross country towards the head of Short Canyon. We found a nice campsite and set out to look for the spring. At first we thought that it was dry since it isn't where the topo map shows it was, but the spring is there, only it is below the cliffs and tucked back in a cave. The water was clear and tasted good.
We explored the area around the rim and found the tiny and very rustic cabin where Charley Swasey died many years ago. We also found some pit houses from the Fremonts.
There were a lot of shooting stars at night.
November 23
Today we headed down Short Canyon. It was very steep at first, but we made it to the bottom without any problems. The canyon then became easier until we reached a couple of big drops. We then traversed the south side benches for a few hours before finding a very precarious route to the floor of the canyon which was borderline technical. After that, it was an easier walk through Short Canyon to the Green River.
We then hiked up Desolation Canyon to the mouth of the Price River, seeing some deer along the way. It wasn't hard, but the miles were long and it was a long day. We set up camp after sunset. A few drops of rain fell and it was windy, but the storm seemed to have missed us.
November 24
Today we hiked all the way up the Price River and back to the vehicle. There were a lot of things to see. We saw bighorn sheep, an old farm wagon, an abandoned ranch which was occupied ca. 1880-1930, and 40-50 pteroglyph panels. Even though it was a big day mileage wise we took time looking at the sites and looking for petroglyphs. We also did eight cold river crossings.
It was a great trip.

Rode an ATV as close an one can get on the road and hiked the remaining short distance to the summit. Incredible views from up there! Pressed on and visited the Clinton oil well and old corral near the end of the road. There was a light snow flurry on the ride back down. The Price River was flowing at about 65 CFS, which made crossing on ATVs pretty sketchy!
Just this past weekend I was in the area hiking Trail Canyon and checked out the river ford again, and it is in really bad shape after the huge flows in September 2016 (I happened to be on a canoe trip on the Green River at the time and the flows from the Price contributed to a significant rise on the Green as well). The road from Woodside to the ford was in about the same shape in 2016 as it was in 2010--there's still a hill that the road crosses that slopes down to one side that would give pause to most full-sized vehicles, but there appears to be plenty of ATVs/UTVs that are making it past there and onto Beckwith Plateau.

Cool peak, great views. I followed Dean's advice and used a mtn bike for the road. Was glad I did, but the pedal up is no walk in the park. Steep grades, scree-filled ruts and sand traps make this a challenging climb. It worked me, and I mtn bike 5X/week. One the way back I was thrilled to have the bike- would be a long walk back...
River was flowing ~50cfs, and fording with a bike at that level was a piece of cake.

Mount Elliott
I did this one on the way back from a trip to the San Rafael area. I got kind of a late start, after 10 am, so I felt a bit rushed the majority of the hike. Not really a good thing on a 21 mile hike. The hike itself was awesome!!, with unbelievable views along the way. I reached the summit in 3 hours 10 minutes. I spent about 10 minutes on top, signed the summit register, soaked in the amazing views and got prepared for the 10+ mile hike back. There were some potential thunder storms building so I hustled down making it back to my truck in 2:46. Around 6 hrs RT. One thing of note... as of 3/23/15 the road is clear to drive to the river crossing. It is a bit tight and sketchy in spots but when I was there, there were 5 trucks including a tundra who had driven all the way to the crossing. There were also fairly fresh Jeep tracks beyond the crossing all the way along the road to where you head off to the summit. I don't know how they got all the way up there.
Just wow. Amazing views. Plenty of isolation. Didn't see anyone for the entire hike.

Long Day
I finally got back to get this summit. The first time I tried was with Greg and I stopped about 1.5 miles away from the top. This time I hiked with Dean and Andy, and I made it! Awesome hike and all worth it.

21 miles of effort
You truly earn this one. After over ten miles of hiking in, you get a nice scramble to reach the top, nothing hard but what eats at you as you are sitting on the summit looking down at the highway a couple miles away, is that you have to retrace those over ten miles to get back to your vehicle that you'll be driving on that highway you are looking at from the summit. Did this one with SP member Kadee of SLC and Andy Martin of Tucson. Great company who made this hike "fun".It was pretty hot on the return so cooler weather is best. Carry plenty of water.
