6/11/17- north face with john, a great quality sans the effort to get there hike. left couloir variation finish
3/15/08- capped off a winter of 11 top-100 summits with a hike up evans. didn't have much energy left by the time we reached the summit, but slogged through nonetheless.
a light snow was falling on the hike out, kind of a fitting tribute to winter as we marched off into the distance.
Climbed Mount Bierstadt then crossed Sawtooth Ridge to Mount Evans. A very fun and long day.
CLIMBED MT EVANS SOLO VIA BIERSTADT AND THE SAWTOOTH RIDGE
and did Bierstadt to Evans...I like that sawtooth ridge!
My first 14er in 27 years! It was really a nice climb.
did a couloir on the east side.
Sweet traverse and an all around good day!
September 16, 2007: Solo. Bierdstadt, Sawtooth, Evans.
July 17, 2009: Wife, dog and I via East Ridge of Bierdstadt (fun route), Sawtooth, and then Evans.
Linked Bierstadt to Evans from guanella Pass. Nice exposure. strong/cold winds in November.
I climbed Evans in the winter of '97. It seemed straight foreward.
Climbed via the Sawtooth, nobody else there but tons on top.
Did the Chicago trail head route. Very pretty coming up from the back side, and nice in the fact that once we got past the obnoxiously placed reservoir there were few people there. Also some fun scrambling to gain the upper lake, with boot deep snow.
Started at Guanella Pass, waded though the famous Scott Gomer willows before the boardwalk was put in, summited Bierstadt and then did the Sawtooth to get to Evans. Headed back to the trailhead without going back over the Sawtooth. Got to the car just as the skies let loose with buckets of rain.
Started at summit lake parking lot, went up Evans, across the sawtooth, up Bierstadt, back across the sawtooth and finally up Spalding to get get back to the parking lot.
The top of Evans was nice but windy. We got to the summit by 7:30am so we had the summit all to ourselves until we left about 30 minutes later.
Winter climb from Guanella Pass. Got to Mount Evans summit after summiting the Sawtooth.
Cloudy day with intervals of light rain and snow.
Mount Evans: 4,348 m. (14,264 ft).
Beautiful alpine scenery without the glacial hassle of the PNW.
Fun climb via the Sawtooth. For the most part at least--with all the snow on Evans West Ridge, routefinding was difficult when I couldn't see the cairns. My profile pic at the time of this posting is me eating a PBJ somewhere before reaching that ridge.
Took 2 of my kids and 2 of my friends' kids (16, 14, 13, and 11) up Mt Evans through Guanella Pass on a morning after a long hard rain (and snow higher up). The willows were HORRIBLE and the trail was sooooo BOGGY and MUDDY until we got around the hill, and even then we had to worry about the occasional bog in the middle of a dry path.
Anyway, it was a great day because the kids made a great team. The wind was horrible at higher altitudes, but most of the kids were well dressed (albeit a little wet after the bogs). The 14 year old twisted her ankle during the way up, so it made for a VEEEEERRRY long day. We started at 7AM but didn't make the truck until 8:15PM amidst flashlights and trailfinding.
For 2 of the kids, it was their 1st 14er (heck of a 1st one, huh?), for another kid it was his 2nd, another one her 4th, and this was my 14th. Gonna try to hit a few more before the snow sets in.
Truly, I'd volunteer to be part of a team that created a TRUE path through the bogs. Anyone up for it? Let me know!
We climbed from Summit Lake, all the way around the ridge to the summit. Met a few people on the way, but mostly sparse. Got sick on the summit, but made it down. I plan to go back and climb it from the Guanella Pass Trailhead.
