From Summit Lake with Mount Spalding
We enjoyed crisp, beautiful fall weather today. Best of all, the short route and later season (later/lesser storm threat) meant we didn't have to start hiking in the dark. Yeah! The south side of this route was more fun and scenic than anticipated. Partner: Husband.

Evans/Bierstadt
I climbed Evans via East Ridge route up to Bierstadt and the across the Sawtooth Ridge. Snow made the Sawtooth Ridge a little more challenging and potentially dangerous. But we took our time and made it across safely. There were very few people out there due to the snow storm. Fun day.

First Fourteener
Hiked Mt. Evans from Summit Lake Via Mt. Spalding. I was the only one hiking up on that route. There were 2 people hiking down from Evans as I started up the ridge from Spalding.
This was my 1st 14er I've hiked. (I don't count taking the train to the top of Pikes Peak, or driving up the road to Evans)
Night hike, from Bierstadt via the Sawtooth. By the time we reached the West Ridge at around 2am, fatigue had set in, and the going was tough. The summit of Evans had a great view of Denver city lights. Started hallucinating things on the way down. Got back to Guanella Pass at about 6:30 am and slept for 4 hours in the car. Fun sufferfest!
Took the alternate route from Guanella Pass which avoids the willows/gully. A little longer route but less wet/strenuous, and very scenic. Saw three moose during the approach. Due to the road being closed for a bicycle race, the three of us were alone on the summit, even with a late 10:00 AM summit! Not bad for a Saturday in July.

Evans
Mount Evans is a pretty peak, but I had long put off climbing it because it has a road to near the summit. In March 2005, I had attempted a winter ascent of the peak via Guanella Pass, Mount Bierstadt and the Sawtooth Ridge, but I wasn’t feeling well and returned not long after climbing Bierstadt.
Mount Evans was chosen for a climb this weekend because the weather forecast was bad in the afternoons and I thought Mount Evans would be short enough for the kids ages seven and five) to get up and back before the threat of thunderstorms materialized.
Kessler, Shaylee, Kimberly and I started the climb at Summit Lake, which was still frozen. We had originally planned to climb Mount Warren first, but we decided to head straight to Mount Spalding so we could get over Mount Evans as soon as we could. If the weather was still good by the time we got back down to Summit Lake we would climb Mount Warren.
As we started the climb we watched several marmots and mountain goats on the slopes of Mount Warren near Summit Lake. After watching them for several minutes, we headed off and climbed to the summit of Mount Spalding where we had a good rest and snack.
Kessler, Shaylee and I slid down a snowfield (we had brought plastic garbage bags just for this purpose) and then headed down to the saddle and up the ridge to Mount Evans. The Mount Evans Ridge was slower than expected and it took more time than we had thought it would, partly because much of the trail was covered with snow and so we climbed the rocky ridge more directly in order to stay off the snow.
The weather was good to the time we were in the summit area, but by the time we reached the summit it was snowing pretty hard and it was cold and windy. We touched the summit and went down a short distance to seek shelter in the old building near a parking lot (as mentioned there is a road close to the summit). We waited out the storm while eating lunch and the skies cleared.
We headed down the steep northeast face of the mountain, but were hit with another storm. It made the going very slippery and the kids did not like this part. We climbed down through the hail and rain storm as quickly as we could and walked the short section of road back to Summit Lake.
Overall, it was a nice and scenic climb, but the weather on the return was not good.

Ho-hum mountain. Weird after seeing no one on the Sawtooth to suddenly see all the people and cars on Evans.

Caught unprepared
We started from Echo Lake with plans to climb up from Chicago Creek. We got to the headwall of the drainage began the climb. The fact that we didn't bring crampons and the snow was still hard packed made for slow moving. We reached Summit Lake around 11am and ascended the steep, boulder strewn northeast ridge to the summit.

Guanella Pass
At such a young age, a few memories:
1. People were "climbing" from the parking lot and proclaiming they climbed a mountain. I was pretty arrogant and mad at them (hey I was 8 yrs old!)
2. I learned how much willows can suck for the first time

Not so badEven though it has a road to the top there are plenty of routes that make it worth going back to multiple times.
