Mid-week solo summit  Sucess!

Had the summit to myself on an overcast Tuesday afternoon. Was in Grand Junction for work in the morning. Spent two hours roundtrip. I didn't realize that about 2/3 of the elevation is gained before the one mile mark! It was tough on the toes coming down.

Dow, that area (and especially Main Canyon little further up east) is famous for spotting wild mustangs.

Route Climbed: Mt. Garfield Trail Date Climbed: Multiple dates  Sucess!

Climbed Mt. Garfield a number of times. It is very challenging for a two mile hike with 2000 feet of elevation gain. Very good training hike for higher mountains or just to keep you in shape. What happened to the flag this year?

Garfield  Sucess!

March 31 2021

Alone, I climbed Mount Garfield. It was a chilly day for late March, but chilly days are best on Mount Garfield since the route is exposed to the sun and relentless. The views were great!

November 11 2020

In the afternoon and early evening, I climbed Mount Garfield. I climbed up the Gearhardt Mine Trail and down the standard route. It was a bit chilly, but a nice climb when the weather is cool since it is so steep.

December 22 2018

In the early afternoon I headed for Mount Garfield in the Book Cliffs. I climbed to the summit using the steep trail, seeing several wild horses along the way. The way up wasn't too icy, but I took a different way down that was very icy. It was dark by the time I reached the vehicle.

November 22 2015

It was cold and breezy when Kessler and I started up the mountain, but things warmed up as the sun got higher in the sky. We had a nice climb up Mt Garfield, making the summit in just over an hour. After exploring around and eating a snack on top, we descended to the saddle and then climbed East Garfield before following the east ridge and then a wild horse trail down to the valley at the mid-point of the main trail. We descended the main trail the rest of the way down. It was nice and warm and the wind had disappeared.

Until we got to near the bottom, we had the mountain all to ourselves.

March 15 2015

Kessler, Kimberly, Shaylee, and I climbed Mount Garfield. It was a little windy, but it was a very warm day, especially for March. We did the steep standard route to the summit.

The kids were usually ahead of us and we had them loaded down with all the stuff.

It was a good little climb and of note, it was Shaylee's 300th mountain.

March 16 2012

I gave a slideshow in Vernal the evening of the 15th and then had to be in Palisade the next night. On the way between Vernal and Palisade Kimberly and I stopped at Fourmile Draw in Canyon Pintado. We hiked the supposed two mile (according to some sources; we believe the loop is shorter) loop past the pictographs and petroglyphs.

After Fourmile Draw we headed to Palisade. We still had time to climb Mount Garfield.

It was really windy, but we made the climb anyway. It was almost hot climbing up the mountain and we made our way rather quickly to the summit. After enjoying the fine views, we returned down the mountain. I didn’t bring trekking poles, so the very steep climb down was very slippery.

March 27 2011

Today I hiked Mount Garfield after church in Grand Junction. It was raining, but after church it cleared and I set off up the mountain. It’s a fairly steep, but easy climb with nice views.

Once at the summit, instead of following the standard trail down, I followed the ridge east over several other minor summits before heading back down to the trailhead.

October 13 2001

I climbed Mount Garfield with my pregnant wife. We saw some wild horses and enjoyed the nice views.

I was in town visiting the in-laws so I thought I'd give this little mountain a try. The weather was gorgeous and the views were worth the hike. It took me almost exactly an hour to reach the summit from the trailhead.
