S Ridge via Hoffmann Creek  Sucess!

Followed the S Ridge via Hoffmann Creek drainage. A few class 3 moves to stay on/near the ridge crest in a couple places. Descent via May Lakes trail. Got to hike the Snow Flat road out as I couldn't hitchhike back to my vehicle/120, so guess I started too early as none of the other hikers had made it back to their cars yet.

From Hoffmann Creek  Sucess!

Climbed on the whim on the way out after a trip to Parsons and Vogelsang. Didn't realize there was a trail from May Lake, so hiked up the ridge by the parking area and then up the steep slabs above Hoffmann Creek. Not a bad route actually, but took the trail to May Lake down.

Choose your own adventure  Sucess!

Came out to Yose for some dayhiking along Tioga road to acclimate the weekend before starting the John Muir Trail. After a morning around Gaylor lakes came over to Hoffmann in the afternoon. I loved the pile or rocks by the summit - make it easy or more difficult, your choice. I chose harder on the way up, easy on the way down. Wheee! Watch out for the evil marmots on the summit.

May Lake and Off-Trail  Sucess!

From SW edge of May Lake, we ditched the trail and scrambled straight up toward the two unnamed(?) granite formations below the saddle. Mostly Class 2; though, I summited the left formation which involved some Class 3.

SE scramble  Sucess!

We scrambled up the SE slopes, first traversed some slabby rock and then approx. 200m of class 2-3 scrambling accompanied at all times by the amazing views of May and Tenaya Lake as well beautiful ranges! This was a much more rewarding and interesting route than the standard use trail up the S face. Fun route finding and no people, just marmots.

South slope .. sort of  Sucess!

Dayhiked from May Lake TH. Skipped the main trail initially and came up a gully in between the east face and approach face (as noted in Secor), looking for technical routes. The East Face (5.7) looked good.

Hoffmann's Thumb looked intriguing .. seems to be a class 4 route on the NE side, and the Regular Route (5.6) might be fun .. saw what looked like a rap anchor up top ..

south slope  Sucess!

Hiked up here on Saturday! Seemed longer / took longer than expected, but kicked back and enjoyed awesome weather. Several snowfields still, but none were treacherous. Overall pretty easy hike, with a fun scramble at the end.

Great views on Hoffmann, even if you don't make it all the way up. Can see most of the major ranges of the park from the top. Great place to eye up the next objective!

Snow on Hoffmann  Sucess!

Planned a Solo from May Lake. Turned around on the first day due to whiteout and high wind. Clear sky on the 13th.

Hard work in the snow  Sucess!

Snow lower down meant a long walk in from the Tioga Road. After that crampons made short work of the main climb!

Standard and NE ridge combo  Sucess!

Took the May Lake trail but didn't notice the faint use trail going to the bottom of the summit slabs. I opted to pick up the ridge instead as I thought it would be an easier route; turned out to be a class 3 scramble; quite exciting with the huge drop off on your right. Didn't expect too much but this was a very worthy peak! First on top for the day.

From May Lake  Sucess!

The views were a little hazy and clouds were blasting by, but I didn't see a soul after leaving May Lake.

.  Sucess!

Little snowy after May Lake, there is a "sharp" left that we missed ... but very accessible peak. Great views and blue ice in the northside valley.
