A great hike to the summit... amazing views, which get more amazing as you get higher! However, after we returned, we realized we'd scrambled up the subsidiary peak (rock pile) that hangs above May Lake, which several people had told us was the summit... :~(

this was the first of my objectives this day which ended with me in the mammoth hospital later that night. after hitting hoffmann, i was en route to tuolumne peak when i pulled down a large rock onto myself which crushed my right forearm muscle and severed my left ring finger. then i had to hike out.

Route Climbed: South Slopes (ascent) / Northeast Ridge (descent)  Sucess!

Warm-up day for the '05 Sierra Challenge with Bob. Hoffmann's south slopes are easy and not too memorable, but we found the peak's east/northeast ridge to be a very enjoyable 4th class scramble, with a short chimney, some slabs, a slightly awkward move or two, and a bit of exposure to keep things interesting.

After descending Hoffmann's NE Ridge, we continued traversing along a cool knife edge to Tuolumne Peak, another quality class 3-4 scramble via its steep, broken southwest face. Descended Tuolumne's easy class 2 south slopes to meet an old trail (not shown on the 7.5') that led down to the regular May Lake trail, just in time for lunch at the Whoa Nellie. Good scrambling, excellent views, nice flowers--a thoroughly enjoyable half day.

I'd been up Hoffmann once before--on Oct 19, '02, I hiked up the standard use trail to see the sunset. Views were rather hazy due to a number of controlled burns along Tioga Road. The most memorable aspect of that outing was reading the summit register (which was filled with entries just from that year, a popular peak). It seemed like every other entry was written by a Hoffman or Hoffmann who felt the need to climb his/her namesake mountain.

Route Climbed: South Slope from May Lake, From Tuolumne Peak Date Climbed: July 22, 2005, August 9, 2005  Sucess!

Headed out with the wife and daughter which made for slow going to May Lake. After a snack, I left them to play and headed for the summit. I met a total of 6 people that were coming down as I was headed up from a late start, so I had the summit to myself. What great vistas. Looked but couldn't find a summit register. A fun hike.

followed the ridge from Tuolumne Peak. Trip Report

A really cool mountain. Despite its insignificant height, Hoffman gives up some great views; it is situated in the geographic center of the park.... Wonderful stuff. Looks like some fun climbs on it, too.

Route Climbed: thumb Date Climbed: 1970  Sucess!

I first climbed this in high school... goldline, pins, swami belt ... remember that stuff?

Later, in the 80's, Attempted to ski from the valley to Mammoth, but turned back at Tuolumne because of deep snow. We skiid up to the top, following tracks (coyote, wolverine?) that went up and over the summit. Camping at May lake, we were watching the sunset, and smoking a joint, and I took a big hit and passed out, falling on my face in the snow!

That trip was also notable for the wierdest xc wax job- skiing along the road by Olmstead point, in that deep snow with the sun across the tracks, I was using green on one ski, and blue with a jack rabbit kicker on the other.

My first time was with Bob and Norm. We were all totally hung over from the night before. Too much MURDER. (That's redrum spelled backwards) This was a warm up before putting on the packs the next day for Mt Russell. I took my wife up the next year. It was great. What a nice little hike to the top.

The views are as one would expect standing on a peak at 10850' in one of the most beautiful places on earth...Yosemite. Great day for a hike with some lite rain on my descent then clearing by the time I reached the parking lot. This was my first peak in Yosemite.

Afternoon climb following Mount Dana coming back home from Whitney region. Enjoyed the view, though it was fairly hazy and smoky so the distant views were washed out.

Very nice view from the summit. Climbed Cloud's Rest the day before. I would do this one again. The reward of the view is much greater than the effort.

Hiked up with youngest daughter, age 25. Impressive views, well worth the trip. That evening we both got wasted on just one beer at Nicely's. Tired is, as tired does.
