Route Climbed: CottonWood Lakes/Old Army Date Climbed: August 2000
I day solo effort; very long day after getting confused around the lakes and taking the chute just north of Old Army and climbing quite a ways before realizing it, reversing and correcting; estimate 24mi. RT.
Route Climbed: Army Pass (South Slope) Date Climbed: Oct 3, 2004
Enjoyable dayhike out of Horseshoe Meadow. The Cottonwood Lakes area is beautiful. The climb from Army Pass wasn't as sandy as I'd feared, and the scrambling up to the summit plateau was more interesting than I expected too.
Beautiful area. Climbed the chute next to New Army Pass by chopping foot and handholds in the snow (no crampons). After heading back from the summit, we descended the west side of the pass, met up with the PCT, and took Cottonwood Pass back to the car. A memorable trip.
Route Climbed: Old Army Pass Date Climbed: October 2, 2004
A much better dayhike than I'd expected. Very scenic. I was racing the weather the entire way and reached the summit just as the clouds converged - no view.
Route Climbed: Southern Scramble Date Climbed: September 15, 2004
Completed a day-hike starting from Long Lake over New Army Pass starting at 8.30am. Found the northern path to the base of Langely easily and trudged up the base to the rock scramble which was ascended without trouble. Worked our way east to the summit (12.30p.m.) where a nice couple were exiting for the descent. My friend arrived 30 minutes lates on the summit. Took pictures and marvled and the drop-off on the Northern and Eastern portions of the mountain. The weather cooperated entirely. It was sunny, mild in temperature, and cloudless. We made it back to our tent after 3 hours of descent. We were exhausted but happy to have summited our first 14k peak.
Route Climbed: Old Army Pass Date Climbed: August 20th, 2003
Left from 5th lake of the Cottonwood Lakes, had great weather, and a great climb. A good peak for anyone looking to get some elevation without too much exposure.
Route Climbed: Old Army Pass Date Climbed: sept 11, 2004
Camped at Muir Lake. 6 1/2 hours round trip via Old Army Pass. Perfect day to be at 14,000 feet. Pretty easy climb except for the last 500 feet. Trail disappears and it's scramble in loose sand and scree to the top.
Route Climbed: Army Pass Date Climbed: Aug-20-2004
It rained and thundered in the afternoon. I was able to make it to the top in the am... beat the bad weather... stay high on one of the trails the last 1000 feet... take the right side of the slope to the summit. Class 3 but you avoid the sandy slopes... windy and cold on the summit...
Route Climbed: via Old Army Pass Date Climbed: August 8, 2004
The south and west side of Langley isn't a mountain, it is a giant sand dune! :-p An enjoyable day none the less. Helped out another climber (read Bob Burd's account in his 2004 Sierra Challenge thread). I moved toward the east and climbed the class 3 rock to avoid the sand. Great Views all around and I forgot my camera :-(
Route Climbed: Old Army Pass via Horseshoe Meadow Date Climbed: July 22, 2004
A long day but worth it in the end for the great views not only from the top, but along the way. A much more visually interesting hike than expected...plus some class 3-4 scrambling near the top!
Route Climbed: Old Army Pass to South Face and South-East Ridge Date Climbed: October 12, 2003, September 1, 2002, August 16, 2000
Via Old Army Pass each time, it's in great condition even though it's not maintained. In October 2003, up from Cottonwood Lake #5 with Arnie Coleman and Chip Boyd via the South Face Class 3 scramble (pick a line, there are many). In September 2002, solo from the trailhead via the South Face, CTC 11 hours. In August 2000, with Mike Garcia via the South-East ridge, Class 2-3 route to the summit (really fun if you can deal with all the sand in getting to the ridge).
Route Climbed: Chute north of Cottonwood Lake#6 Date Climbed: July 17, 2004
Bag it, tag it, sell it to the butcher in the store.
This chute sucked. I would not take it unless you are the patron saint of ascending loose scree. I descended via Old Army Pass and found that much more pleasant.
