New Army Pass  Sucess!

Day-hiked up Old Army Pass the day before but got stuck on the rocks below the summit too late in the afternoon, so went back down and camped beside the parking lot. Went up New Army Pass the next morning and slogged up the steep sand and rocks to the moonscape up top. Somewhere along the way, I lost my favorite black tank top--but the view from the summit was worth it.

Route Climbed: Old Army Pass/ New Army Pass  Sucess!

Nice hike through the meadows and by the lakes. Went up NAP, down OAP, I personally think NAP is better, but they're close. Managed to find a little class 3 scrambling by climbing straight up the summit block.

Standard Route  Sucess!

Got to trailhead at 9:30am, jammed up to last lake, dropped our gear, started up about 1pm and back at camp around 7pm. Then decided to hike out. So we inadvertantly day hiked Langley.

Wasted at Cottonwood Lakes

Had hiked Sonora Peak in the morning, and driven the 2.5 hours to Horseshoe Meadows and started my hike to Cottonwood Lakes at 5:30pm. Was totally spent when I crashed at 8:30pm at Lake #3, and didn't have the mojo in the morning to get up and climb the 3000 feet up Old Army Pass and up to the peak. Spent the day with a couple fisherman fishing Golden Trout and hiked back out to Horseshoe Meadow.

Snowpack was light, didn't look like any ice equipment would be necessary to get up the pass. Talked briefly with a few groups coming up from the meadows to do Langley.

Its all beyond the pass  Sucess!

The first 6.5 miles to the last lake at the bottom of Old Army Pass are nearly flat (about 1600ft gain). The pass itself isn't too much work, but the last 4 miles or so are easy to underestimate. Overall, great hike.

Horseshoe Out & Back  Sucess!

Army Pass  Sucess!

For a first timer, it is difficult to make out the trail between New Army Pass and the first ridge. Wonderful hike though.

New Army Pass  Sucess!

Camped at Long Lake. Some snow/ice at the top of the pass but got around it ok without any gear. Opted for the class 3-4 summit approach for fun!

My Second 14'er  Sucess!

We began hiking from the top of New Army pass towards Mt. Langley at around 2pm. It was a very long hike to the top and we had to climb some of the class 3 route. The view from the top was spectacular and it was completely clear. It was very windy and cold on the way down and we didn't get to camp at Soldier Lake until 9:30 that night.

Cottonwood Lakes to Army Pass  Sucess!

Awesome summertime trip. Thunderstorms each night, bears roaming through camp and a group of kids that had a blast. Took most of them (my son included) up to Army pass where all but one bailed back for camp while Joey G. and I made the summit.

Route: New Army Pass  Sucess!

Left Cottonwood Lakes Trailhead the day before and set up camp at High Lake. We climbed Cirque Peak in the afternoon. Next day, our route to Langley took us over New Army Pass. A little windy on the summit but the views were as good as you could want. A dog reached the summit while we were there and this was quite a sight.

Route Climbed: NE Chute Date Climbed: Summer, mid-80s  Sucess!

Can't recall the exact date, but do remember the epic. I was invited by a friend to join her and a group of others from the Sierra Club youth section in LA to climb Mt. Langley. There were about ten of us, including a trip leader and an assistant. Hiked to Cottonwood Lakes early on a Saturday morning. Got to camp in a hurry and after a quick vote decided to push for the summit the same day. All went well, except that the planned descent via New Army Pass was blocked with snow and ice. This left our large group the option of making a slippery, death-fall potential traverse of several hundred feet with the sun setting behind us or trying to find our way down (Old) Army Pass and walking around the Southern edge of Cirque Peak along the Pacific Crest Trail. We chose the later option, which also had snow but was much less exposed, and staggered back to our tents roughly about 20 hours after we had left the car the previous morning.
