"As an adolescent I aspired to lasting fame, I craved factual certainty, and I thirsted for a meaningful vision of human life - so I became a scientist. This is like becoming an archbishop so you can meet girls."

5 times!I have been up this mountain in four consecutive summers, from 2004-2007. I have always had great weather for it. I never really appreciated the magnitude of the mountain until I came up over the forehead on the Long Trail with a 30lb pack on my back. I had always come up from the north on the LT in previous years. Did it a 5th time with my wife, brother, mom, and dad on a vacation to Vermont in 2010. Went up Sunset Ridge Trail and down Laura Cowles Trail.

A Great End to the YearA fun day in the snow during a dry winter in Vermont. We even managed to pick up a hitchhiker in town and bring him up the mountain. Unfortunately, Craig twisted his ankle on the descent.

The best mistake everWe wanted an easy short hike for the kids. My partner accidently picked the subway trail (a little harder than the other trails) and it turned out to be an awesome adventure. (One mom was in sandels & a skirt, but she's tough.) The kids were **delighted** by the pristine trail and fun caves. Loved the ladder. We had a great time. Couldn't have been more fun.

Clear DayIt was a really clear day. Our route started from the end of the Parking Lot of the Toll road up the Long Trail to the Chin. It's an easy class 2 which makes for a lot of fun.

Hell BrookThe Hell Brook Trail is aptly named. A lot of scrambles on wet slabs and an unrelenting grade until you reach the ridge… and what a ridge! Mansfield is a beautiful mountain. I hope to get back to Vermont more often.

Laura Cowles & Sunset RidgeAsended from Underhill State Park via the Laura Cowles trail and returned via Sunset Ridge. This is a great loop hike and descending Sunset Ridge allowed us to better enjoy the views out toward Lake Champlain an the Adirondacks

Nice HikeI think we hit the Vermont Teddy Bear Factory and Ben and Jerry's on the way back to the hotel. It guess it's a very well located mountain.

Mansfield in the mistTwo unmitigated peak baggers would not be deterred by a little rain storm and hiked up to the summit anyway. I loved the whole area, Smugglers Notch very interesting in a "Headless Horseman" kinda way.

Too many routes to listAlthough the summit can often be very crowded (with people and radio towers), the multitude of trails up the peak make it a blast to hike. Try the Halfway house to canyon trails for an exciting route to the top. Be ready to shed your pack though, and push it through the caverns you have to crawl through! Enjoy!
