Nice

Nice picture. Looks cold.

I was curious, how hard was it to follow the trails leading up to Marcy? I was thinking of making a Fed. summit attempt. I have been there in the fall (with no snow).

Thanks.

Re: Nice

Thanks. It wasn't that cold on that day. We got "caught" in a nor'easter. Weather was very warm (32F) the night before and started dropping like a rock on our hike to the summit.

As you can see from the photo, visibility was maybe 10-20 yards. I set a compass heading on the ridge we were on and we followed that in addition to following the cairns that we could see. Most of the time we would see a cairn, run to it and then wait for a lull in the storm so we could see the next one, because the visibility was so poor. We only knew we were on the summit when 1. the wind was the strongest and 2. we started going downhill!

In nice weather, I'm sure its very easy. I did use crampons on the way up, but if you have snowshoes with very aggressive crampons, they should do fine. I would be prepared for cold weather though, we got "lucky" with it being so warm for that time of year.

There is a trip report on my webpage about that trip:
