We stayed overnight at the Opalescent brook shelter and went for Sklight then Marcy in snowy conditions. The weather cleared only after we had begun our descent toward Haystack. The top seemed nice. It seems like every adirondack high peak we have been on has either been snowy or had no visibility except maybe whiteface. Oh well. That's the daks for you.
Long hike on a beautiful day. The summit is a shopping mall.
Long hike, but worth it. Terrific views from top! Windy on summit. Last two miles of trail were wet and muddy.
Spent two cold days bagging the High Peaks. Hit Algonquain, Coldon and Gray, spent a brutally cold night in a lean-to then hit Skylight, Marcy and Phelps. We were past peak for the foliage thus making this a cold overcast and gloomy adventure.
Nice hike with Svetlana, Ross and Akshay on Memorial Day weekend.
Our group from the Catskills hiked all the way around the base of Mount Marcy in the rain, before tackling the summit in good weather. I was sure homesick as an 11-year-old on my first journey away from home and family. The lakes were eerily quiet (from acid rain). Good view from the top.
long trail.. 3 day hike......beautiful conditions..lots of people on the summit
This hike (7.5 miles, 3000 feet in under 4 hours) convinced me that I could climb all 46 Adirondack High Peaks. After reaching Marcy, I climbed nearby Skylight, and Gray.
Climbed with my father and brother. Beautiful views, good weather. A trip I will never forget.
My first time and a lovely day. I have been there now several times and it is always a pleasure. Though my favorite trip was one Feb. day- a group of us came over from Grey.
A long, long hike to the summit. Nice crowd and
Nasty weather. Previous night temperature hung around 32 degrees. Precipitation varied from one minute to the next - snow to rain to mist to ice to slush to just not pleasant. Went for the summit on the morning of the 23rd. Weather was moving in, temperatures were dropping like a rock. Reached the summit before noon. It was so windy, the wind would blow my leg around so much I couldnt place my crampons where I wanted to! Great trip, unfortunately no views.
Absolutely gorgeous day - Sunny, light winds, 35-40. Started off in dark at 5:45, reached summit at 11:00 with a few stops. First to reach summit that day, passed about 20 people on the way down.
Hiked from Marcy Dam via the Van Hoevenburg Trail over the summit to Panther Gorge. Spent the night at Panther Gorge and then climbed out near Little Marcy. Fun trip.
After a long and grueling 9 mile hike to the summit, it was well worth the effort. It was a very windy and chilly day on the mountain. Awesome view!!!
Hiked this more then once, but I always seemed to have great views. The winter climb was the best. I have done it mostly from Grey, over the land bridge.
Great hike up, bummer view - it was completely overcast and I couldn't see more than 50 ft out.
Stayed at the Loj with the wife and we did a day trip up Marcy. The trail was mostly a horrendous quagmire until we reached the treeline due to rain in the days leading up to our climb. Quite a few snakes slithering across the trail. Nice weather for the climb though - sunny with great visibility. Spent some time at Indian Falls on the way up. Always nice to dip feet/head in the water on hot days. Fended off attacking ocelots around 4000 feet. Kidding. There were quite a few people on the summit; the weather was clear and views were great. (Great cell phone reception up there, by the way.) The way down felt long due to the ever-present mudpits. A great hike though, and we got back in time for dinner. My fifth time up.
Next time I am definitely doing Skylight and/or Haystack while I'm up there.
Staying at the Loj was very nice (great food) but I prefer tents at Marcy Dam or further out.
