my 2nd fourteener ...
via main TH up (trail 1487) - started 06:55, summit 11:25. With friend Paul. We met a couple other hikers on summit (Cole and Hugh), accompanied them down Half-moon Creek trail (1485) and they kindly shuttled us to the TH we started at. The atmosphere was significantly cleared of smoke compared to day before, when we hiked Elbert.
Aptly named mountain, the altitude was brutal on me; this being a climb I made before even really getting into this sport. Two years later, in better shape, I climbed Elbert and Massive back to back in two days from Elbert campground.

Solitude at the Gates of Heaven
Two days after summiting Elbert, I opted to not try for the summit of Massive, and instead hikes up North Halfmoon Lakes trail. I followed the "Tour de Massive" approach up to the basin formed by Massive, North Massive and Massive Green. There at just under 13,000', I was rewarded with the solitude and grandeur of this area.

SW Slopes RouteProbably the better way to hike this; very few people on this route until you intersect the main trail on the summit ridge.

cloudy at the summitHiked the East slopes route up Mt. Massive in a little less than 6 hours. Clouds obscured the views at the top. Beautiful woods along Colorado Trail.
