Route Climbed: SW Slope Date Climbed: July 17, 2005  Sucess!

We missed the turnoff and went clear to Half Moon Creek, then backtracked and went up. The trail up is awesome. I proposed to my now-wife at the top.

Route Climbed: SW Slopes from N. Halfmoon Trail Date Climbed: 02NOV2005  Sucess!

Climbed with Mark Connell. Snow on the trail in places led us to bushwack. We found the climber's trail but lost it again while still in bushwack mode. Climbed more directly up the western (left hand) buttress of the gully, traversing crusty snow and a few Class 3 moves. Reached the first false summit, then Massive Green, and then finally the peak. Deeper, drier snow up high and wind, hard spindrift. Had to don goggles on the return traverse. Postholed across the ridge, but had to traverse some Class 3 bumps. Signed register. Beautiful mostly sunny day. Great views of the Divide. Got my eye on Oklahoma and Deer now. Tried some glissading down the gully but the snow was thinly crusted and soft. Found the climber's trail on the way back and stayed with it. The upper meadows in the basin were free of snow, and it was a warm day down there. In at 0615 and out at 1515.

Saw a snowshoe hare, grayjays, mountain goats on the slopes below South Massive. Ton of Elk, bulls even in the pastures and roads down near Leadville.

An interesting note: We saw something floating down into the gully while we were just ascending above treeline, it looked like a small parachute. It may have been a bird but it didn't flap or wave around or deviate from the apparent drift of wind. It looked to be white and red. It didn't flutter around like garbage, but made a straight diagonal descent, heading South East, as if it came from North massive, landing in the slopes under South Massive. Didn't see anything on descent.

Mark took pictures, will try to add here or to my profile later.

Route Climbed: West Slopes Date Climbed: 8Sept05  Sucess!

Came up by way of the western lakes and across the entire ridge. Found a working Motorola radio on the way down, just in case someone lost one. Contact me sometime. The western route is steep, but it's worth it. Make sure and climb the new route which cuts off to the right way before the trees end. I missed it and contributed to the trail damage on the way back down. Sorry.

Route Climbed: Mair Range Trail Date Climbed: 8/23  Sucess!

Ten hours round trip. I took the class two trail down. Only brought two liters of water, two power gels and two power bars. Lack of water and food definately contributed to slow round trip :P

A bit crazy as this was my first 14er. Lots of snow to cross. Great view from the top! 53 14ers to go!

Route Climbed: Southeast Ridge Date Climbed: August 3, 2005  Sucess!

Hit the three southeast summits and the true summit. This is really fun if you enjoy a little route-finding. We found our way through the trees at 5am; basically you just head uphill through the woods until you reach treeline. From there just follow the ridge.

A lot of talus, make sure you don't descend too far to the north.

Reclimbed using the standard route from the Mt Massive TH 9/1/2018 with James Oliver.

Route Climbed: East slopes Date Climbed: August-7-2005  Sucess!

I climbed Massive (my second Colorado fourteener) right after summiting Mt Elbert taking advantage of great weather (no storms). Being an afternoon summit bid I was the last one to tag the lonely summit that day after a 4hr and 35min hike.

Steep! We headed northwest from the summit and went around the north side of Massive Green. We then descended steep scree slopes into the Ampitheatre. Great time!

Route Climbed: Southwest Slopes from North Halfmoon Creek Date Climbed: 17 July 2005  Sucess!

2:45 up under azure skies. The 3 foot high rock cairn for the right turn is on the right side of the main trail. And there are actually two cairns. The CFI trail hits the ridge north of the saddle.

This is the short, but steep route on Massive... they're putting in switchbacks, so Roach's mileage is off. Started 3:00, up 6:15 for sunrise. Gorgeous. trip report to come - did Elbert same day

This was my second attempt in 2 weeks. I made it this time in 4 1/2 hours. That ridge was a lot of fun but the hike back down after the saddle was rather long. Great views.

Route Climbed: Mount Massive Trail Date Climbed: July 11, 2005  Sucess!

I had planned to Hike Peak 1 in the Tenmile Range on this day, but my sister's friend, Kate, had planned to do a 14er, so we climbed Massive. The weather was gorgeous: clear skies, not too windy, though it was pretty warm coming back down. It was a good, but very long day.

My second attempt on Mount Massive. This route is enjoyable, but it makes for a long day. The view from the top was fantastic!
