The driving on the Blue Ridge parkway was the scary part.
A rolling jaunt over 4 6000 footers made for a fun half day in the mountains.
Repeated in 1997
Fifth & final hike of a highpoint and whiskey trail driving vacation. Great hike up the Old Michell Trail. Returned via the Commisary Trail. In hindsight, I would do the loop in reverse.
It was a picture postcard day. Just perfect. The views in the Smokies were just incredible...
Backpacked with a buddy and had our food stolen. was able to summit and catch a cab
I began my hike from the very remote and hard to find Black Mountain Campground. Sleeping in my rooftop tent I could hear the babble of the brook next to my camping spot. The hike to the summit was 12.3 miles round trip and 3,763' elevation gain. Sleep was earned.
Old Mitchell Trail to Buncombe Horse Trail for extra mile out to get view of Mt Mitchell; retrace back to Old Mitchell & complete summit hike. Weather: 0800 39F at hikers parking, 37F at summit 4 hrs later with 25mph wind.
Mount Mitchell the more difficult way starts with a good 3k ft ascent. Completed as training for Kilimanjaro while on the east coast. Overnight 1 night. Under-appreciated need for careful water management.
My first State HP, quite nice if extremely easy. No views as the peak was socked in, it made for a cool atmosphere though. Nice area, pretty forests on the way up and a neat summit tower and marker. This is also the most prominent and isolated peak I've done to-date. Good hike, would recommend
Most people hike this, but I was very limited for time trying to catch the eclipse in Nashville, so I drove here in the early morning.
What was most notable was that I saw a black bear driving down!
It is funny how peak bagging works. This trip started with "Lets hike Mount Mitchell", but we all know that that is not how it ends. So we flew into Atlanta, drove to Brasstown Bald, stayed in Asheville, hiked Clingmans Dome, Sassafras, Brasstown Bald, and finally on the last day in the rain Mount Mitchell. Although there was no view and it was seasonally cold it gave us all the reason more to celebrate the summit. In summation, Three days, 4 high points, over 30 miles.
Easy walk to the top
Loved the Blue Ridge Parkway. Windy and cloudy and cool enough for a jacket up at the summit.
Lovely drive along the BlueRidge Pkwy
The Black Mountains are beautiful.
Climbed on a fall break trip to NC.
Foggy and cold day so visibility was bad but happy to scratch of another Six-Pack!
Tackled the highest point East of the Mississippi.
