Mt Mitchell Challenge  Sucess!

Summited during the Mt Mitchell Challenge - a 40 mile trail running race that starts in Black Mountain, NC, climbs to the summit of Mitchell, and descends back to Black Mountain. Oh, and this is in February with cold, ice, snow, wind, etc.

Clear day with my daughter  Sucess!

My 10 year old daughter and I started out from the Black Mountains Campground in roughly 30'F weather, 8:00AM. Clear skies. The higher we went, the warmer it got, to the point I only needed 1 layer. Since it was the first time for both of us, we became a bit confused when the Mitchell trail met the Mountain/Sea trail. But, 10 minutes later, we found the Mitchell trail again and went to the summit despite the construction signs. The summit was a tad cooler, forcing us to put light jackets on. But, the view on this cloudless day was something to die for.
Grandpa was waiting for us at the Mitchell parking lot. Since my daughter was tired, he agreed to take us back to our car at the campgrounds.
This was 10 y/o daughter's first mountain, and hopefully something that she'll remember for the rest of her life. It's beyond words to say how proud I was for her to summit Mt Mitchell

Does driving count?  Sucess!

Too bad about all the dead Fraser firs. Kind of ugly, as state highpoints go.

Foggy morning  Sucess!

We drove into the area in the dark and found a camping spot along a nice dirt road. In the morning we woke up and did the short hike to the summit in extremely foggy weather. Visibility was pretty low, but the summit was still a very interesting spot.

what do you mean closed?  Sucess!

I never thought that I would be the one ignoring the "no trespassing" signs on a mountain, but seven hours of driving and two and a half on the trail are too much of an investment to not summit. my summit photo has me standing next to a crane!

sightseeing excursion  Sucess!

I was in the area for the Grandfather Mtn. Marathon. Had to come up Mt. Mitchell to see the view. Unfortunately the top was fogged in. Did a few mile circuit on the trail through the spruce trees along the summit ridge.

Run Forrest, Run!  Sucess!

Via the trail from Black mtn. Camp. The girl and I got an early start but near the top, she wasn't feeling too hot. We got to the top and bundled her up, but she wasn't feeling up to hiking back, so I ran like a superstar (or maniac if you may have happened to be on the trail at the time) back down the trail to retrieve the truck and tear up the BRParkway. I did cover the 6 mi in about an hour...not bad, huh? Got to the parking lot as it was getting dark to find her sitting in a Park Rangers' truck with the engine running and the heat on all toasty. Seems like they talked to her a few minutes after I left. Needless to say, my ankles will never be the same.

Had to "sneak" up  Sucess!

Went up the Mt. Mitchell trail - which was actually a pretty cool hike! Super foggy and humid, and the last part of the trail was closed off for construction. Had to get the highpoint, so we snuck around...quick ran up to the top...took some pictures and got out of there!! Had a blast - pretty area!

Thankfully no enforcement  Sucess!

Came southbound on the Mountain to Sea Trail to find the last .3 miles closed off. Hiked around to the parking lot on the nature trail and found it closed from that side too. Well, I had come too far not to see the summit so I went around the gate with another like minded individual and made it to the top.

Route Climbed: Black Mountain Crest Trail to Mt. Mitchell, Mt. Craig, Big Tom, Balsams Cone, Cattail Peak and Potato Hill  Sucess!

Peak 1 of 6 in Southern Sixer Six Pack following Brasstown Bald, Union Cty (GA) HP and Wolfpen Ridge. I ignored the "No Trespassing" signs to the summit - guilty as charged. Didn't want to be denied my 10th HP. Check out my trip report. Must say this was and still is my only 9 Peak/HP day.
