Fun scramble from trail, nice views too.
did it with whitney
Rewarding views with a quiet summit experience away from the busy trail. Would have stayed a while longer, but with Whitney calling and the clouds building, we were off the peak and on to greater heights. Completed the journey with a quick departure from Consultation Lake camp in a lovely afternoon hail storm. The trail was draining a couple inches of icy water for many miles. Left camp at 5PM to reach car at full darkness. Side note: Love those trail runner shoes and smart socks. Miles packing out with feet in water and no discomfort.
a side trip with Vendulka after getting up Whitney via MR.
Nice and easy side trip on my way down off whitney.
Had tried several times before alone. But running into some experienced climbers taught me the value of experience. Turned out to be a pretty easy scramble.
CLIMBED THE MOUNTAINEERS ROUTE WITH NICK NELSON TO WHITNEY AND THEN CONTINUED SOLO OVER THE TRAIL TO MUIR GREAT VIEWS OF THE SWITCHBACKS ON THE TRAIL TO THE SE
It was a little difficult to find the way to the top...fun scramble though.
Up it twice! Once in combination with Mt Whitney.
Solo Russell / Whitney / Muir in a day hike for the second time. Once on the trail, it's only a short scramble, definitely worth the extra 1/2 hr.
Towards the bottom of the switchbacks I tripped and cracked a rib, which didn't feel that great. My total time was still better than before - 14 hrs or so.
Used a rando rope for a little protection but it was not really needed.
You might want a rope...
fun third class.
bagged it from the WT on the way down. Great view of the dreaded switchbacks. I agree not quite the necessary 300', but worth the excursion.
Quick tag from the Whitney Trail.
Almost feels like cheating doing it from the main trail, but the good class 3 (3+?) scramble takes away the guilt. Second 14-er of the day (3rd if you count Keeler Needle). Dimitri and I skipped Crooks because its too much like Keeler and I needed something else to look forward to on my next trip. Awesome views of "The 99" and Trail Camp.
Day hiked the MR with 2 friends. Their first time up Whitney. My 4x made all the better with friends. Very busy in the chute lots of people knocking rocks loose. Took the main trail back and tagged Mt Muir on the way.
At the end of a long Carillon-Russel-Whitney dayhike, I decided to head up the short use trail north of the Whitney Trail to the fun class 3 scrambling of Mt Muir. It was very worth it.
Very short diversion. I see a maximum prominence of about 280' above ridgeline. I take it that there isn't a 300' prominence rule for CA 14er's, or perhaps this was a just exception to the rule for a good cause?
Climbed from the main trail after climbing the MR up Whitney. Almost made the long hike out the main trail worth it. Almost. Some fun scrambling up to the top.
