Pennell  Sucess!

Hiked up the road. It was in much better shape than expected and I wished I had driven. Also did a bunch of bonus peaks in the area. Farmers Knob was the best of the lot. There was excellent camping at Bastian Reservoir which has the only trees around.

Awesome!  Sucess!

Took the standard route up from Straight Creek after camping on the Coyote Benches. This was a really fun hike even though it is mostly up a road to some electrical stuff. The road is pretty steep and the views are really good, and you do feel like you're pretty remote. A really awesome summit! Might have even enjoyed it more than Hillers, but that one is good too.

Mount Pennell  Sucess!

Very little snow on this hike made for a fairly straight forward effort. We followed the service road that leads to some FAA equipment on a sub peak (10,818)to about 10,200 before we broke off of the road and headed cross country. The road heading up was snow free until about 8700 feet where at that point we used snow shoes up until we headed cross country. We worked our way up steep south facing slopes that were quite dry up until a false summit on the summit ridge. From there it was an easy traverse on rock and snow to the top. Benchmark and summit register (if there is one) was under about five feet of snow, while the reference marker indicating the BM to the north was dry and exposed.

From the East  Sucess!

U.S. Independence Day, 2004.

Hiked up the road from here (elev 7888 feet). On the way up, bypassed the FAA station and went up the fire-burned chute, starting just below the final big switchback in the road. Went past the FAA station on the way down.

Pennell's summit had a funky USGS benchmark that stood on a pole about a foot above the rocky ground.

North Ridge  Sucess!

Took the North ridge. Had a great day with not a cloud in the sky. Awesome area! See Dean's picture of mine and Greg's original summit log.

Warm warm day  Sucess!

Summertime isn't the best time to do some of these desert peaks (90 degrees) but by going slowly and drinking lots of water, we hiked the 9 mile round tripper and came out fine. This is a neat peak and the views are expansive. We hiked up the road for a good portion of the hike due to a big tree that blocked the road near its start until we reached the FAA station on the subpeak and then did the last past following a rough path up to the summit. I was with my son in law on this one.
