Pilchuck  Sucess!

I've been up this little gem 2 or 3 times, though not sure about the dates. Always a fun one. Next time, I'll have to check it out in winter.

Great backyard climb  Sucess!

Great climb to catch early and watch the sunrise from the top. Buddy and I took our boys up here a couple times - great climb for kids that are getting into hiking.

Super great hike  Sucess!

Great mid-season hike up Pilchick. Snow began midway of the traverse past the initial talus field. The trail was decent to follow, and eventually, we just ended going straight up, kick stepping in. Microspikes were handy. Very beautiful in the snow. Want to do this in winter, but this past season the gate was closed and I don't want to hike the additional 8 miles.

Hiked also on 08-15-2013

Repeat Ascent  Sucess!

A couple of co-workers had heard that I like hiking, so they asked if I wanted to join them for a summit hike of Mount Pilchuck. I tend not to repeat summit trips but I had not visited the peak in 17+ years so I made an exception. Great views from the summit, with a nice sunset to watch, and wildfires could be seen in the distance. Nice peak.

Ran it  Sucess!

Quick afternoon run on a day when clouds blocked most of the views. The trail was rougher than I expected. There is an interesting history exhibit in the lookout cabin.

My First Summit  Sucess!

All I brought was a pocket knife. Over the years I learned to bring useful things like water.

Worth it!  Sucess!

Many training hikes on this mountain in preparation for Rainier, most of them up the road and only as far as the trailhead.

It was fun to finally take a day and just have a leisurely hike to the summit.

Lots of people up there hiking for a Monday.

Beautiful day & great views, will probably bring visitors here.

2 hours up, 1.5 hours down (yup, I was pretty slow).

Clouds? Clouds.   Sucess!

My sister and I decided to do this trip partially because she didn't have a place to stay in Seattle for the night, and partially in hopes that the weather forecast was completely wrong about all the clouds and rain. It wasn't. Left the trailhead at 6PM (yeah, we got a late start), and reached the lookout at around 7:45. Encountered snow on the last third of the trail; we had ice axes, but poles would have definitely been good enough. We shared the lookout with four others that night; a young Canadian couple and two high school girls. Made some interesting food for dinner; Alfredo really does taste better when you make it with milk. Hiked/glissaded down on Sunday morning without a hitch. Didn't get much of a view for any of the trip, but still had a good time nonetheless.

Remember Your Boots!

It was such a beautiful day that a late-day hike was difficult to resist. Got to the trailhead and realized I'd left my boots at home. Made it about 2 miles up the trail but even with my trekking poles and ice axe, the sneakers were just too much of a challenge on the slushy snow.

Turned around. Another day.

First WA Summit  Sucess!

Friend took us up when there was still a good amount of snow, such that he was able to teach us how to glissade. That was fun.

It was empty in the lookout, and there was a group of kids on the side of the mountain having fun sliding down the well worn glissade paths.
