And came down one of the east chutes (I agree with renogurt this isn't the shortcut I thought it'd be). Original plans were for a pleasant afternoon walk to Circle-All peak, but changed my mind after the first mile and did Raymond instead. With my afternoon start, I needed my headlamp on the way down. There was knee-deep snow in a few spots on the ridge, but snow cover was inconsistent. A young bull moose was standing almost on the trail in lower Butler Fork and wouldn't budge, and snorted and thrashed the branches with his antlers when I tried to shoo him, so I ran back up the trail and bushwhacked up and around him, nearly getting cliffed out in the dark.
This is the last part of Wildcat ridge and I was worked. Note tod self: the chutes that come down from just below the summit are NOT a shortcut to the trail.
6-24-07: Butler Fork
10-14-07: Porter Fork and then onto Gobblers Knob
Gotta Love this one.
Copmbined with Gobblers Knob for a great day in the mountains
My first summit over 10,000... gotta start somewhere.
Warm day above the smog in the valley.
Awesome, bluebird day on Mt. Raymond. Solid crust on the northeast ridge made for a fast ascent. Skied the east face down to Butler Fork. Nice, soft powder...Mmmmmmm, Mmmmmmmm.
This was my 4th time on top. (Jan. 07), but the first winter ascent. My cousin Brooke and I enjoyed a beautiful, cool day. One hour to Cirle-All ridge, another hour to Baker Pass, and 55 minutes to the summit. Crusty snow. Just under 2 hrs to come down, back into the ugly valley inversion smog. Ugh. Since then two more times to the top, one in late winter and one on 6/15/07. Always a nice mountain. On the 15th we also did Gobblers Knob. Topped out for #7 at the end of the gnarly and grueling Wildcat Ridge hike with Wasatch Mtn Club members. Eighth summit on 8-30-07 from Bowman Fork: 2+35 up. Summit topper #9 on 10-2-07 from Butler Fork TH. 2+07 up (1" of snow). Tenth time at summit but first time from Mill B North trail (BCC S-curve) and scramble up the south ridge. 2+30 up. Had to bushwack to the top, but once on top found a geologic marker.
Climbed it after school via Bowman Fork, ran across several mountain goats on the rocky ridge near the top. One turned a corner and leaped over the ridge like 5 feet in front of the girl I was with.
08/24/2006 After meeting up with Matt on Gobblers Knob I couldn't resist climbing up Mount Raymond. I headed down Bowman Fork and over to Alexander Basin. I met up with a moose on the way down.
06/12/2007 Up Butler Fork with Matt early in the morning.
07/17/2008 Up from Mill B North with Matt.
Have ascended twice... once via Butler fork and the other via Mill B north fork. Mount Raymond is an awesome mountain to climb and I think it's way more fun than it's neighbor, Gobblers Knob. Did both ascents on weekdays and saw absolutely no other hikers the entire trips. A must do hike in the Wasatch.
Climbed this with Ammon Hatch, and highonpeaks. Quite a fun trip and some really nice viewson a super clear day.
-5/24/07 Wildcat Ridge Mt. Oly-->Gobbler's Knob.
-June 13, 2006 via NE ridge/Butler Fork.
-Gobbler's Knob to Mt. Olympus via Wildcat Ridge. June 28, 2005 and June 2003. Started from Butler Fork.
Did with Mountaingazelle from SP. Very cool hike with great views. Went over and climbed GN as well.
Around 11am I summited Mount Raymond with Ammon Hatch, Elessar, and Slade Knightly (non-SP member). It was a beautiful sunny and hot day without much of a breeze even on the summit. It was so clear out you could see hundreds of miles in evey direction. It was a great mountain to practice basic mountaineering techniques!
Had originally planned on doing Gobblers and Raymond, but soon changed our mind and only did raymond. Was at the trailhead by 7:00 (an hour later then planned), and summited at 11:00. On the way down the snow got really mushy making travel difficult through the upper mill a basin. Fun glissading back into Butler Fork. Very clear views of the Uintas and clear out to the Stansburys.
Corn in January on S facing slopes.
Climbed this peak many times, all times of year, usually in conjunction with Gobbler's Knob to the East. An interesting route is up the little used Mill "A" Gulch, past the Maxfield Mine ruins.
