Climbed up from Hellroaring Cr where it crosses the road. Upon returning to truck I found out a marmot, packrat, or pika had gnawed some wires under the truck causing about $200 in damage. This is a nice daytrip but beware of the rodents!

Epic Peak!
Climbed up Rearguard from the Moon lake trailhead starting at 8500 feet approx. Got to the top as a storm was coming in, had to sprint down the plateu. A great peak!

spring trip
Made a solo backpacking trip to the summit during beautiful spring conditions. I started where Forest Road 3004 crosses Hellroaring Creek, and scrambled up the Plateau to the right of the creek. I eventually camped near Snowbank Lake, with great views of Rearguard, Peak 11977', and Spirit Mountain. The next morning I climbed the tallus field to the northeast of Sliderock Lake, and then climbed easy snow slopes to reach the summit. Pretty awesome views! I took a bunch of pics and then worked my way back down to camp. I decided to mix it up on the way back, and hiked towards Forest Trail 11 on the southern ridge of the Plateau. Much of this is an old road, perhaps driven prior to wilderness designation (or later). I reached the high (9800') trailhead and encountered deep snow banks on the top of Forest Road 3004 as soon as it entered the trees. I had to use my ice axe as some portions of the road were totally snowed in, with a side slope matching the terrain. After a couple miles, I descended to where the road was partially melted and easier going. Not too long after I reached the car and had completed a cool little loop tour of Hellroaring Plateau, with approximately 14 miles of travel. It was my first trip to the Beartooths and hopefully not the last.

Been staring at this thing from across the valley for way too long! Went solo from Hellroaring trailhead and climbed the south slope between Sliderock and Moon lakes. 2 and a half hours from car to summit.

A nice dayhike that's rewarded with one of the best views in the Beartooths at the summit. Climbed up the southeast ridge and returned via the "ramp" down to Sliderock Lake. Made it almost all the way back to the Hellroaring trailhead before seeing another person.

Solo climb
Solo climb up the south ramp from Hellroaring trailhead. Easiest 12,000 footer in the Beartooths. About 10 miles round trip with 2400 feet elevation gain. Nice day trip. Didn`t see anybody.

Came up with my dad, who was then 55 (but continued peak bagging with me into his 70s). North Carolina born and bred, he was sure impressed by those big boulders on top! In those days, there was also a very entertaining summit register at the top.

Just a stroll up from the Hellroarin' trailhead, except I had a 35 lb pack, then continued on down to the pass between Moon and Black Canyon Lakes, down to Moon Lake and on over to Frosty Lake above Glacier. Rough country, no trails. Nice summit.

Spent the night in my vehicle at the Hellroaring trailhead at 9,800. Started off amidst the morning alpenglow, dropped off the plateau into Sliderock Lake, then up the ramp to the top. Easy stroll, but nothing is real easy at 12,000 feet. The view is one of the best in the Beartooths, and you can see most of the 12,000 footers, as well as a good part of the North Absaroka. On the return, we dropped down the south ridge and circled back to our car that way.

We left our pickup at the bottom of the rock creek canyon (the hellroaring lakes road was closed because an avalanche took out a brige) and went up misery creek to the plateau. The skies were somewhat cloudy, and the wind was progressively colder as we approached the top. Once on top, we froze in the wind, ate lunch, and climbed one of the spires. After that we headed down the south side, crossed over the hellroaring drainage, and dropped down to the pickup.
