Made the short side hike off the Appalachian Trail during my thru-hike. Very nice.
We hiked in along the AT and saw quite a few ponies. The summit is uneventful, but the AT shelter was nice along with some very nice views. One of my favorite eastern highpoints!
I went with some friends to camp near Thomas Knob. Leaving from Elk Garden later in the afternoon, we hit the summit on the way up. The skies were perfectly clear with views stretching for miles. Once the skies grew dark we watched satellites and meteors from our sleeping bags (we didn't bring any tents). The temperatures got into the lower 30s according to our thermometers. We couldn't have asked for a better day.
Did it with a couple of friends. Saw ponies on the way up and on the way down. No view from the actual summit, which lies less than a mile from the AT.
Just getting around to siging my logs. Memorable trip and my first state HP.
Hiked October, 04 and November, 07 from Massey Gap
One of the best fall color hikes I've ever done.
This was my first experience of snow camping. We got hit by an unexpected storm and ended up walking around the Grayson Highlands through 6 inches of snow. A couple years later I returned to Rogers via AT section-hiking all the way from Springer.
Did this on a south state highpoint tour before heading out west, definately a good warmup hike to stretch those winter legs for the big stuff.
Only time I've been on Mt. Rogers with good weather!
The top of Mount Rogers was still covered with snow from a recent storm. Please go to http://50summits.blogspot.com for a complete trip report.
Start of the fourth loop!!;
It was a flash one as we went on a 10 days road travel to bag 12 HP's...
Just ten days after we got back from the last loop!!!
It was nice to find a highpoint in the area that didn't have a road to the top. Met lots of thru-hikers throughout the day.
During 1976 AT thru-hike
Man was it warm. I don't believe that winter will ever come this year. It was 65 degrees and sunny, even though the forecast had called for rain all weekend. I was climbing in a T-shirt for most of the way.
Had a great trip and saw it all; rain, sleet, snow and sun. See trip report "All She's Got."
Summitted Mt Rogers from the Massies Gap parking area in Grayson Highland Park. Turned out to be a nice day after the storms blew through. Trip report to follow... Highpoint #5.
nice hike...beautiful autumn day!
Beautiful day. Drove down from CT and did Ebright Azmith on the way home.
Awseome day on the trail, albeit a bit windy. I love crisp fall days on the trail! The route up Wilburn Ridge was rougher than I expected but the scenery was amazing. Very busy. I'm surprised there are not regulations on group size here as trail erosion is an obvious problem. Maybe there is and people are just ignoring it. Regardless it was a great hike and I'm anxious to get back!
