Great Glissades  Sucess!

There were some decent glissades on the way down, plus it was neat seeing all the snow cornices up there.

1979

My brother made a climb the year before St Helens blew it top. Glad we did not wait another year!

White out  Sucess!

Back in the days before you needed a permit. Couldn't see a thing up there.

Washington's Broken Top  Sucess!

Having climbed this mountain dozens of times in all seasons, I'd have to say that climbing in a flowery dress and wide-brimmed hat on Mother's Day is special by any measure.

Too many beers (the night before)  Sucess!

Really thought this was going to be a cake-walk so didn't train hard. That was mistake. Did ok with very bad hangover. Incredible views.

crater crest not summit

We made it up the 8200' crest, but didn't traverse over to the high point. Maybe I'll go back and do it again and we can get an mmHHm! earlier start.

Three hours of sleep, 11 hours walking  Sucess!

Climbed with a buddy of mine and my dog. We got a 5 am start and ended up getting a little lost in the dark. Snow starts about a mile into the trail and caused us to lose it. We waited for sunrise to find we were on a ridge across from Monitor Ridge. After a lot of bushwhacking we got on the right trail. It was very windy the entire day. We would sink to our waists in the snow by the rocks and my dog gave up about half way up. I had to carry him on my shoulders awhile but then he got his second wind. It was a tough one to make but it was worth it. The views were incredible without a cloud in the sky.

Warm Day  Sucess!

Second time climbing St. Helens in two years. Started out from Climbers Bivouac around 0845. Warm sunny day top to bottom. Very hazy at lower elevations and thunderheads could be seen off to the south around Mt. Jefferson. Still a lot of snow up at the top, especially inside the crater rim preventing a direct view down into the crater.

Go Ski St. Helens!  Sucess!

Worm Flows is a fun straight forward route. Ascended on Skis the whole way. Wide open fun skiing the whole way down. Climbed with my friend Clint McMahill during our final year of med school.

Ski Monitor Ridge  Sucess!

Great ski. Looped the LooWit trail in 2008 which was far more difficult due to washouts on the creek crossing.

backup to the fallback  Sucess!

It ain't Rainier or Hood, but I had a lot of fun on this little climb. Excellent hard snow on a cloudy morning and huge glissades on a hot and sunny afternoon.

Atop a sea of clouds  Sucess!

Took the Swift Glacier route as the climbers bivy was still closed for the season (it was open two days later). Thin clouds surrounded the 6000 foot level however the trail was melted out enough that visibility was never an issue. Once we broke through the clouds it was crystal clear above us for the remaining 2000 ft.

via Worm Flows  Sucess!

All day rain, turned to snow about 8k ft. No visibility, slushy snow. Not the best climbing experience.

mothers day madness  Sucess!

Who knew this tradition existed?
3 hours up in running shoes with skis on board for beautiful descent after hanging out waiting for sun to melt the snow.
Perfect weather, good company, fun turns.

Climbed with Tom Waggoner (below) and 2 other friends. Missed the views at the top due to low visibility but still a great day out with great peeps.
