Climbed Mt. Baldy via the Ski Hut trail and bowl.
Ascended "Once is Enough" chute between Dusties Dare and the Hourglass. Snow was in great shape, spring like. Fun local mountain!
Went with Taco and crew to practice arrest skills and ascend the bowl. A beautiful day but windy as hell on top.
I'm a local so this is a favorite: Baldy Bowl, RR, North Ridge, Backbone, and ski hut trail.
Via Ski Hut Trail
In town for my sister's XC meet---ran up the regular route, chilled on the top (it was cold!), and then came down the devil's backbone route which was INCREDIBLE. Great views, great pictures, great running!
Up via ski hut and down via the devil's backbone. It was absolutely still up at the summit for a bit - absolutely NO wind! That road sucks at the end sucks. I still wish the ski lifts were running that day.
Met Diving Dan at the trailhead and he gave me the grand tour on Mount Baldy. Very cool day!
Mount Baldy is the beautiful, bulky, and bald head of the San Gabriels. There is a nice alpine forest present on its slopes, but the summit, however, is nothing but rocks. Winter time brings forth good amounts of snow, which makes both the Baldy Bowl and the Devil's Backbone excellent arenas for mountaineers.
Have done the Devil's Backbone from TR and San Antonio Ski Hut Trail back down in August.
Up Baldy Bowl, down Devil's Backbone. Nice hike but didn't like the road much.
Climbed via Blue Ridge route. Lots of loose rock on the way, some class 3 scrambling. Did 3 summits: Pine Mountain, Mount Dawson, and Baldy. Round trip in little over 9 hrs. Very strenuous hike, all the travel is either up or down the slopes. Good, comfortable boots will make all the difference.
Was back in the area on business again so had to head up to Baldy after meetings. Starting from the ski lift parking lot, did the trail under the ski lifts up to the notch, then the backbone. Up in 1:45, down in a fun 0:45. Car to summit to car: 2:30. Ran into only three persons on the trail on a Thursday evening.
I told my sons that all I wanted for Father's Day was for them to accompany me up Mt. Baldy. They agreed, and after a quick drive from San Diego & breakfast at IHOP we were on the Manker Flats trail by 9:45. I missed the Sierra Hut trail, and we ended up taking the fire road up to the ski hut. They bailed at that point so I did a quick push to the summit and back via Devil's backbone. 4 hours from car to summit to car. Although it would have been better to share the top with my sons, it was a great day all around.
Business meetings got out early, so I took advantage of the opportunity in the afternoon. Should have picked an easier trail and summited.
My son's first time up to the top. Great day. Great weather. Little snow, but lots of wind.
Last minute trip made very scenic with all the snow on top, just went in regular hiking boots. Was my 9th CA county HP and the last one I did inadvertently before I started going for them intentionally.
Great day got an early start missed most of the people
did a bunch of times year round from different trailheads
Went up from the ski hut, and down the backbone all the way to the ski lifts.
The Baldy Bowl was a fun route. Whiteout conditions pretty much the whole day. Crampons and ice axe still needed past the ski hut.
