Hiked from the service road near the ski hut to the Notch to Devils backbone to summit. Lots of people out that day, really fun and took us 6 hours total. Rang the bell on the way back and had a delich burger at Baldy Cafe down in town. Loved it
Did a quick run up Baldy before my flight out on Sunday. Amazing that you can get up to 10k ft so close to LA!
harwood, baldy, w baldy; 12 miles and 4500' gain
My last summit of Baldy was in April of 2011. We went up Manker Flat and down the devils backbone/the Notch. Total time was about 6 hours, largely because I got some nasty vertigo coming down a snowfield on Harwood towards the backbone. Kickstepping was the name of the game but obviously everything worked out just fine...just be very very careful on the backbone!
The Village trail is also a good one, but adds 2000' of elevation gain with almost the same distance. Give that one a shot someday, it has amazing views and no one on it usually.
Had a day to kill in SoCal - I'll take this over Disneyland anytime.
Surprisingly low amount of snow for the time of the year. Trail was regular except for some icy patches above the hut while gaining the top of the Bowl.
Training hike for C2C: up to the Notch on fire road and then Devil's Backbone, down the Ski Hut trail.
One of many times - usually up ski hut trail - best training hike close to LA
Went up the service road to Devil's Backbone then back down to Baldy Village where we hitchhiked back to our car.
Beautiful day and a good workout, only a few other parties on the trail. Surprisingly clear views from the summit!
went up via the ski hut trail. Nice sunny day and the trail is pretty good. Pretty good views despite the haze.
Came over from Iron Mt via San Antonio Ridge. Have trip report on it.
Climbed with xav. beautiful day, mostly free from snow except a little towards the end. Carried some snowgear but didn't use any of it.
Started off in the rain as a summer storm was moving out, reached the summit surrounded by clouds. Continued down Devil's Backbone to Harwood & the 3 T's.
From Manker flats with Aj and Md on a really nice day. Carried ax and crampons even though we never used them. Most of the trail was snow free.
Second ascent - the trail from Bear Canyon is one of the best training hikes in all of SoCal due to elev. gain.
First of many successful summits, right in LA's backyard.
Up and down the Baldy bowl with Bare, Smashie and the Robot.
My plan was to climb all the local peaks in prep for my first 14er this year. Last weekend we climbed Mt Pinos which is 8800ft. We started at 6000ft reaching the summit at 8800ft and back down in only 5hrs 20 min. So our next and closest peak was mt baldy. Since California is having a snow problem and most peaks have no snow we decided to give Baldy a try. We parked and started the trail around 9:30 since we were all in good shape we hit the peak at around 12:15pm since snow wasnt a factor this year. it was a solid push the entire time with little breaks. The peak was extremely cold with viscous wind. After a few pics and food we headed back down. we kept a quick pace and were pushing for the end rest and food. all in all it took us 5hrs to the summit and back. Good times.
Manker flats to ski hut trail. Devil's backbone on the way down. Bagged Mount Harwood on the way down.
