Training Peak  Sucess!

Climbed it many times. When I first started hiking, I was way out of shape, and this peak became my first goal. I can still remember how tired I was the first time I climbed it. Now it's my training peak for bigger and higher goals.

3 times, 3 routes  Sucess!

This was my first ascent to Mt. Baldy, I climbed it twice more after. This time I went from Manker Flats up the fire road to Baldy Notch and then along the Devil's Backbone. I got hypothermia at the top--good story, I'll write a trip report someday.

The second time I took the road from Manker Flats and then the trail past the San Antonio Ski Hut--saw two bighorn sheep at the very summit.

The third time I took the "intense" way from Mt. Baldy Village--wow, hard hike, even harder to pull one of my friends partway up.

I love Baldy--the king of the San Gabriels.

90th Ascent  Sucess!

I love this mountain!
I have climbed it every month of the year and up several ways; to the Sierra Club Hut another the bowl and up it with several variations, passed the ski lodge and up the backbone and from the Baldy Ranger Station to the summit several times including on snow shoes. Even camped out on the summit twice on the 4th of July.
View is outstanding!
Plus out the door from our house to the trailhead in about an hour.
How can you beat this peak if you live in the LA basin?

Lots of snow going up the couloirs. Postholing going up the chutes. The top was very very cold with 30+mph winds. Went with Blair and Aaron

Went up the bowl postholing over my knees most of the way. 2.5 hours in the bowl other than that it was an awesome day.

Late Start

First attempt at Baldy. After hearing the conditions, my buddy and I made a last ditch effort to pick up some snowshoes, crampons, and ice axe. We didn't get started until 130, so our chances of summitting in the daylight were slim. The trail on Bear Canyon dissapeared at 7100 and it was getting late, so we turned around. Turns out conditions were horrible around 9k. Hopefully next time.

Snowboard descent  Sucess!

I've climbed Baldy many times but this time wanted to get a snowboard descent before all of the snow disappears. Hiked in lugging the splitboard via the ski hut trail. Decided to head up pretty much dead center in the bowl to see if any of the remaining snow fingers would make a good descent. Too many rocks so after reaching the summit I rode down along the standard hiking trail and continued down the west side of the bowl. A bit of walking to reach the top of the bowl for the remainder of the descent, but other than that I was able to ride from the summit down to the hut. Some pretty good snow remains on that side of the bowl! Fun stuff!!

My first big peak  Sucess!

Baldy was my first big mountain hike when I was 8 years old. It started a long term addiction to mountain hiking. I will always remember that first summit with my father. I was tired, but I enjoyed every bit of it. I returned a least 10 more times to this memorable peak. My parents still live in Upland below the peak. I remeber using an ice axe for the first time on Baldy many years later. One time on the peak with my family, a army huey chopper landed on the peak. The hike from the ski cabin was a favorite. The north backbone trail from the north was a memorable hike. Still in my mind, one of the important peaks in the west. My Baldy memories will always have a special place. I have lived in Wyoming for 15 years, exploring the Northern Rockies as much as I can, but if not for Mt Baldy, I might have never had the passion I enjoy now.

Great Hike  Sucess!

Great hike. Only a couple of tracks in the snow from the day before. My golden and I topped out in 50 mph winds and foot deep snow - nice and sunny though. Went over to West Baldy and back down. It was really fun.

A great hike

Hiked up past the ski hut. Saw a sheep along the trail to the summit. Steep in some places but not too bad, especially after Mount Whitney.

Ski Hut Trail

Probably my 20th time or so using either the Ski Hut or Devil's Backbone trail. Need to try Bear Canyon and Register Ridge someday just to mix it up. I went solo this day and wanted to push myself up the Ski Hut trail. Wanted to break 2 hours but ended up doing it in 2:09. Next time...
