Going up twice  Sucess!

Went for both peaks, which means we had to ascend Shavano twice to go back down. For some reason going up after doing a bunch of down was harder than doing the same amount of elevation just going up the whole way.

Also the road coming in was awful. 6 miles of rocky nonsense.

The Colorado Trail and Dall Sheep  Sucess!

My third 14er in 3 days. Shavano was defininately my favorite. A portion of the trail follows the Colorado trail before moving steeply upward throught the aspens. What a glorious morning. Just after clearing the tree line a saw 2 large Dall sheep. The hike up the peak was a bit of a scramble, but nothing dangerous. Looking back I probably should have went for Tabeuache Peak, but I am trying to enjoy the journey and not make it so much about the accomplishment. So I will just say this is a start.

Double summit  Sucess!

After an incredible evening on Princeton, we headed to a campground up County Road 250. We set up camp around midnight and quickly fell asleep. A 5:30am wake up call got us up and moving towards the summit of Shavano. We began the hike at the Blanks Gulch Trailhead and attempted to follow the new trail they are cutting up the east shoulder to the summit. We ran into a government worker who was measuring new routes and putting down temporary orange and yellow trail markers. The old trail to the saddle on the south side of the summit sure is worn, and a change is much needed to give that area an opportunity to regrow. We met about 8 other hikers on the summit, then headed to Tabaguache. On the way back, we met 2 other hikers, Gerald and Matt (father and son from Colorado Springs) that were making their first summit of a 14er. We headed down the east ridge, similarly to how we had gone up, and Gerald and Matt followed us down.

Standard route  Sucess!

Not my favorite. Camped near the trailhead. Got up the sloppy stairmaster to Shavano and saved Tab for another day. Honestly wouldn't highly recommend this one - IMO, just do it if you need to check it off the list.

With Tabby  Sucess!

From Blanks Gulch trailhead. Minimal snow and a beautiful day with no storms. Unfortunately, on the way back, near Fairplay I suffered some weird tingling throughout my body that caused my legs, arms, and hands to seize with slurred speech. Found out from my doctor bro-in-law that I probably had low blood sugar! Once I had some juice and chocolate milk back at home, I was all better. Make sure to eat right on the mountain to avoid any scares! Keep those sugars up!

Three and a half hours up in bluebird weather. Two couples passed me on the ascent, but only the female halves of the couples stayed ahead of me. Then over to Tabby.

Late Arrival on Summit at 3:10 PM (Revised Elev is 14,231 ft)  Sucess!

My girlfriend (Mia) and I climbed Shavano from the west side, not via the standard route. There was a trail, but we lost it at some point and climbed up a steep slope with loose rock. It was hairy climbing for a good 30 minutes. Mia said the F-word a few times. She didn't like the improvised route at all. I didn't like it either, but I had been on much worse slopes. We made it to the summit at 3:10 PM. The weather was good to us.

I wanted to make the traverse across the knife-edge ridge to Tabeguache Peak, but it was too late. As it was, we didn't get off of Shavano until it was nearly too dark to see. I hadn't packed a headlamp, but I always do now. You never know when you might get delayed and end up descending in the dark.

Shavano/Tabeguache Combo  Sucess!

Started around 6:45AM. Trail is mostly dry below treeline with a few chunk of snow along trail. Still large sections of snow above treeline. Did not use crampons or other traction since steps were left in snow already. LOTS of wind. Climbed Tabeguache as well. Back at car around 1:30PM.
