We started out on the wrong trailhead, the Angel of Shavano, but decided to go ahead and start from there anyway. The next mistake we made was larger, but made for a more enjoyable climb. We began by hiking north on the Colorado Trail to meet up with the Mount Shavano Trail, but we turned west to soon onto a jeep trail that led to a mining area. Thinking that this was the Mount Shavano Trail, and thinking that it was apparenty rarely used, we bushwacked our way out of the trees onto the southeast ridge of Shavano. As soon as we reached the tree line, we noticed the Mount Shavano Trail on the south face of the ridge to our north. We continued our climb up the ridge to Espirit Point then crossed north towards the Shavano saddle. Moving quickly because a 10:00 am thunderstorm was brewing. We got caught in the hail/snow storm just above the Shavano saddle and sat out the storm under a rain poncho. We then climbed the last 800 ft to Shavano. With another line of showers approaching we opted to skip Tabeguache and headed down the Shavano Trail.

Climbed up the Mt Shavano Trail and glissaded the snowfield. Awesome 1,000 ft glissade! The snow was almost too soft but it made the slide very comfortable. :)

Shavano is a steep hike with a ton of vertical. If I were ever to comeback to this mountain I would really be up for an ascent up the Angel of Shavano route.

We got a 3:30 AM start on this one and managed to pick up a solo climber in the parking lot. It worked out well because my usual climbing partner is too cheap or too lazy to buy his own headlamp. We now had two lights in our group! A perfect day that included two separate hours on the summit and a trip over to Tabeguache in between.

It started out on the Colorado Trail for two miles and I would recommend this part for anyone. It was one of the most beautiful sections of a trail that I’ve ever been on. Of course the time of the year makes a big difference. Everything was green and it was peaceful through there. After the first two miles I ran into another parking lot. I guess I didn’t read my book well enough because this was the main trailhead parking lot – oh well. So up to Shavano I went. There were a lot of people on their way up also. I was really moving today passing about a dozen people. The trail up to Shavano’s Saddle wasn’t that steep but after that was the last 800 vertical feet up to the summit which was the steepest and hardest part of the day.
At the summit there were about 10 people and the clouds to the west were building. I was a little tired so I opted not to do Tabeguache. I sat for about 20 minutes and then I went down. The hike back to the car was very long, and there was some thunder going on to the south so I couldn’t wait to get back to camp.
All in all Shavano was a pretty hike and not to steep except for the last 800 vertical feet to the summit. If you want to glissade down the angle you will have to go before I went since one of the arms was already melted and the body looked like it was down to its last week before it would be gone also. This time of the year in the mountains is a great time to go because all of the flowers are in full bloom and everything is so green.

We got to the trailhead at about 0730, the weather was good, except for a few clouds building near the summit. We started up the trail. The aspens were just turning and were beautiful. Near the summit the sky was very gray. We got to the summit at about 1145. We saw a total of two groups of people on the moutain. We were the only ones on the summit. We had lunch, and I proposed to my girlfriend. She said yes, we were happy. The weather was getting a little scary so we decided not to do Tabeguache. As we hit treeline on our way down we started hearing thunder, then we got rain and hail. We got back to the car at about 1425. We drove back to Bailey got some dinner, and then soaked for a while at the Mt Princeton hot springs. Overall one of the best days of hiking I have had.

Nice day on the mountain, no afternoon storms to speak of. Very windy after the saddle point though. The Angel Trail is a good work out, consistently steep pretty much the whole way. Started at 8 am, summitted at 11 am. Went over to Tabeguache afterwards.

From Angle of Shavano trailhead followed trail thought initial switchbacks and then strait up following game trails tending toward the right At tree line you’re on a large open hill side, Mt Shavano trail is visible to the North across the south fork of Squaw Creek. The hillside turns to nice ridge hiking on stable scree with remnants of an old trail marked with sticks in some place and in others the scree has been arranged to make a trail. Possible an old CMC project? This ridge joins the main Shavano trail at the saddle below the summit. We took the ridge to Tabeguache and then down the old Jennings Cr. Trail (it is steep and loose in places and splits into multiple indistinct lines, i.e. route finding required) and then down the road 4 miles to finish the round trip. The weather was perfect, there were a few easily avoidable patches of snow. About 16mile round trip and 6000’ vert.
I would like to thank the Colorado Fourteeners Initiative for the massive amount of work to the lower part of Jennings Cr. Trail and in general for all their good work maintaining and restoring trails to help limit environmental damage and enhance the experience for all.. Check out 14ers.org

Made the traverse to Shavano from Tabeguache in 40 minutes. Was on the summit at 1:50 and luckily there was no afternoon thunderstorm brewing. Only saw three others on the summit probably due to the time of day. got back on the trail 10 minutes later and was back to the car at 4:50. Fun day and two more 14ers to mark off the list.

I guess I'm a minority opinion on this one - I hated Jennings Creek. The trail starts immediately with a LONG, frustrating scree slope, which seems to double in length for the return trip in the afternoon. I'm no stranger to strenuous climbing, but this section of trail is just plain ugly. I also did Brown's Creek a few years back and thought it was MUCH better. Take it for what its worth, I guess.

This is the only time I've climbed both summits in a "twin Peak" situation. The climb from Tabequache was a breeze. When I climbed Tabequache, I didn't even stop on the summit. I just continued on. I was afraid if I sat down I might not continue over to Shavano. On the down climb, I almost went down McCoy Creek but for a climber in front of me realized she was going down the wrong way and she called back telling me I was going the wrong way. Thanks whoever you are. I got caught in a thunder storm on the ridge just before I reached timberline. Fortunately there was no lightning.
