Tougher this time  Sucess!

When friends and I climbed Sherman in 2017, we had the mountain to ourselves, which was unsurprising because the summit was encased in cloud. This time around, we luckily got the last parking spot at the packed trailhead -- latecomers had to park miles down the road. The passage of time had not proved kind either to the trail, which seemed much more scree-filled than before, or to my knees, which consider scree a mortal enemy. But the hike up was worth it; this time, the views west toward Mts. Elbert and Massive against a bright summer sky were striking. They say this is the easiest of the 14ers, and it probably is. Still, that doesn't mean it is an easy hike; a long trek up an old mining road nearly to the saddle between Sheridan and Sherman, then another 1,000' of scree to the summit, make this a strenuous if worthwhile endeavor.

Carried baby up - Ran down in under 17 minutes (New Record)  Sucess!

https://www.strava.com/activities/7618226554/overview
J’s 1st Unassisted 14er & 1st for Iris. Descent Record/FKT for me ;)
Great family day on Mt. Sherman! Brit was nice enough to carry Iris most of the way down so I could bomb down the mountain from the top. So fun! I was hoping to have Journey do her 1st 14er totally under her own power when she was five, but it just didn't work out before her birthday. This was a first summit for 10 month old Iris. She had seemingly zero problem with the altitude...very different from the time when we took 1 year old Journey up Wheeler Peak in Nevada & stayed on top for over an hour talking to people and then realized she had turned blue and wasn't responding. Needless to say, today was a much more relaxed affair...I got to run down fast NOT carrying a baby lol.
Journey crushed it and only took two short snack breaks on the way. She had a little "altitude emotion" breakdown a hundred or so yards from the top, but it was quick and she ended up running to the summit ahead of us.
We've all been sick (and still are a little bit) the last couple of weeks so I'm just happy everyone felt good and had a great time.
Running down quick, it took me a mile or so to get my lungs working decent and get in to attack mode. Finished off the last mile in 5:30. I've now set records on a peak in every major 14er mountain range in Colorado :)
Went back up for the girls afterwards for some extra vert and to relieve Brita from carrying Iris.

Iowa Gulch  Sucess!

Clmbed as a combo with Sheridan peak. No snow on the route, but the summit ridge still has a lot on the east side. High winds and wind chill were a bit unerving, especially on Sheridan, had to be 80 mph gusts.

Pretty Easy Day  Sucess!

I was planning on doing this hike on my last day in Colorado as I thought I could complete it and still make my afternoon flight. However, after topping off Quandary in the morning, I figured I would see if I could get up and down Sherman later in the afternoon. I parked at the trailhead, got out and immediately saw two large bolts of lightening. So, I opted for the next morning. On a good note, the South Park Brewery in Fairplay is a good place for a beer. Also, there is plenty of parking/camping on the way to the trailhead. I did see a moose on the drive back in.

Iowa Gulch  Sucess!

Drove the road up to the Iowa Gulch "trailhead." Snow in the basin was already soft by 9 am. Post-holed a lot and then had to put on spikes to traverse a few steeper snow slopes that were still frozen. Once in the gully the snow subsided and the trip to the summit was uneventful.

Sherman  Sucess!

The 9-10 miles of road up to the gate is terrible. Not 4*4, just insanely bumpy. Enjoy. Straight forward climb, and is short and sweet. Bit of snow and cornice section left at saddle. We went up it in AM, but traversed around to avoid in PM. Lots of talus, but it is not steep enough to be a pain in those sections. Nice little ridge line up to summit. Enjoyed the day, even with the strong winds.

Fourmile Creek  Sucess!

Hiked up Sherman with some co-workers. It was chilly in the morning and windy on the summit, but sunny and beautiful. The leaves were just starting to turn up there. We stopped at South Park Brewing for beers afterward.
