Climbed w/ Kati as a training thing, actually my first time going to the top of the haystack. the scamble route was covered with about three inches of fresh snow, with the older underlying stuff and ice in some areas, it was a tricky scramble, as each hold had to be excavated, and an even trickier downclimb. any hairier and i would have wanted crampons and ice tools. based on my limited mixed climbing experience, i would say it was around an M2-3 in these conditions.
Has all the elements--short drive to get there, year round access, old growth approach, gymnastic finish on the Haystack, great views, great workout. Done it many times, even as a kid with my neighbors and their Toy Manchester dog named Goliath

Fun
Glad there are these half-day quality workouts in the mountains complete with a bit of scrambling near my new home of Seattle, since I'm apparently not settled enough yet for longer excursions. Foggy, so no views, but nice ambiance.

I really don't care for the hike up to the gully, but sometimes friends who have never hiked say "What's that big mountain out in North Bend? Let's go there." Ugh. Really? Ok.
Took a party of three females up to the basin. One was content staying behind, the other two bagged the summit with me. If two women who have never hiked before can bag the summit, you know it's easy. One hand in front of the other. One foot in front of the other. Yes, people have fallen here, but really, as far as scrambling goes, this is a piece of cake. I have no idea how many times I've really been up here.

Finally Got the Haystack
Finally got to the true summit with my friend Jordan Halas. Scramble was no joke but the foot and handholds were there. Now the monkey is finally off my back.

Early Season
Great early season hike. Packed up a book, ipod, and lunch and spend over two hours on a ledge at the very top. Great day overall!

Snowing on StackClear skies to the west and ominous clouds stirring about to the east made for an eerie final ascent.

Good way to start the new year!We took the back route up to the top on New Year's Day. Tons of snow, which made for a tricky descent. Not too much traffic (surprisingly).
